So yesterday I went to the gas station, hadn't even got out of my car and this guy, about my age I'd say, approached me. He asked if he could pump my gas and said he was earning money for college. I told him no thank you and I was able to do it myself and he started hounding me and asking me if I went to college. I said yes, and he said he thought I would be the first person to help him out, did I not have to work during college or something and understand how hard it was? He was beginning to piss me off so I turned around and went and paid and pumped my gas. He approached this woman next to me and gave her the same story and she let him pump her gas. While he was doing that he started telling her that he could fix the chip on her windscreen for $150 etc. etc. Anyway, as we were both leaving at the same time, he says really loud to her but while looking at me, "Thank you for letting me help you out."
I dunno, was I rude? I'm sorry but how did I know why he was really pumping gas? I'm guessing he was looking for tips, he seemed respectably enough dressed and clean cut, but I didn't have cash on me anyway so I couldn't have tipped him. I'm just leery of anyone making money for college or whatever as I've had those magazine salespeople come to my door time and time again and other similar offers and honestly, I'd rather donate to a scholarship fund than just hand it out.
Anyway, he irked me and he said he's gonna be there from 10-6 M-S - I'll be avoiding that gas station from now on!
Re: Kinda weird/annoying
You should have reported him (to the gas station, bc he was soliciting on their property). He was trying to scam people, honestly. You werent being rude.
BTW, we got had on one of those door to door magazine salespeople. DH just went to the bank to tyr and get the charge reversed and they wouldnt do it. Sucks. You really cant trust people anymore.
My parents next door neighbor (who has alzheimer's) almost got scammed over the weekend too. A couple guys were cleaning out her gutters, then told her while they were up there, they notice she had some chimney damage that needed repaired. They told her to give them $150 in cash and they would come back to fix it (and they would leave their ladder there so that they could trust they would come back). My Dad overheard them and was giving her the no motions with his arms, she caught on and sent them packing.
Honestly, anymore as much as it sucks to think this way you cant trust people and their pity party sad stories to get money from you. I know Im not going to give in anymore.
(geez, sorry that was so long!).

I don't think you were rude at all. I don't know if it is because I am jaded and it seems like you hear so much about scams nowadays that I never give to people if they come up to me.
I would call the gas station and let them know and see if they know what is going on. Personally they would lose my business until this guy is gone because I would not want to be harrassed by him. I hardly ever have cash so he probably would have been rude to me too.
If he wants to earn money for college there are other ways to probably do it as many probably won't let him pump gas for him.
