Re: Hey, new mommies!

  • Why Hello!

I'm doing well...things are in such a good groove now, I'm loving it. I wish the weight would just melt away and my tummy instanly goes flat again but, eh...I had a kid 4 months ago! Indifferent

Mia is awsome! She sleeps & eats SO well.. today she started rolling from her back onto her front. When we grab her hands she pulls herself up and has great neck control. She 10000% knows whos' who. And with a little help is sitting up. She LOVES t.v. - her favorite: Mighty Machines lol

I was thinking about starting her with some applesauce, sweet potatoes etc. soon. She showing all the signs that she'd be ready for it...we'll see.

    Here are some pics...

  • Things are okay with us. I am back at work so B is at daycare. He is motoring along and can crawl faster than I can catch up to him which means he is getting into everything. He walks along furniture and can stand on his own now.

I am ridiculously excited that it is warmer out now. Bring on the long walks and trips to the park!

Great pictures Lisa! I can't believe how big Mia has gotten. How much does she weigh now?  I would talk to your doctor about solids. I know ours said nothing before 6 months (although some say it is okay to have cereal at 4m)and when we did start we were to start with the rice and oat cereal.

Where does everyone get shoes from? B has wide feet so we have the hardest time getting anything to fit him.

  • Things are going well in our camp. Pey is rolling in her sleep, sitting up and eating like a champ. When we put Pey on her tummy she's trying to put her knees under her so it may be the start of crawling which is awesome. With her being a preemie and coming to where she is now it's amazing.

We are going to start going out more for walks and stuff now that it's alot warmer out.

Lisa we need to see each other more since we are so close.

Jen, Pey has wide feet as well and I heard stride rite shoes are great for wide feet. I know that designer depot carries them I'm not sure where else, I can let you know where I find them.

  • Things are great here as well! I am starting to panic a bit about returning to work in Sept. though. I registered E for daycare already and now just need to work on convincing them to use CDs with him. It may take some time, but I think I can do it.

Evan is an awesome eater. He is doing about 3/4 finger foods right now and doesn't turn down much at all. I want to start trying him on more multi-ingredient foods but he loves hummus, sweet potato pancakes, edamame and mango right now.

He has turned into quite the sleeper/napper (knock on wood - twice!). We did Ferberize him but I think it was time that helped as well. We were lucky to get him at the right stage.

Evan is "creeping" everywhere right now and has been regularly doing push ups and rocking on all fours so I'm sure regular crawling is around the corner.

Right now we are doing a baby/mom exercise and swim class and just finished a baby signs class. We also try to take advantage of the Early Years Centres and meet up with our other mommy/baby friends regularly.

  • Things with us are crazy.  The boys have decided not to nap at the same time anymore which means no breaks for me...DS#2 isn't sleeping through the night and DS#1 has been waking up at 5 for the day and is miserable! (I leave him in his room til he starts to cry, usually around 5:30)

We've been going for walks everyday, and once a week we go to the early years centre.  We do playdates 1-2 times a month with people we know.

Other than that, its all just eating, sleeping and pooping for the boys and laundry for me.  Two in cloth sucks!

JenandJoe...I got my stride rights at Kiddie Kobler.  Saucony is made by strde right too, so you might be able to get wides in that brand too.

We're going for her 4month next week, I'll know for sure but I steped on the scale and did some math...she's about 12-13lbs now and almost 25.5" long!!! She has the rolls on her legs...I love them! lol

Re: solids - Mia's been having rice cereal for over 2 months now, and yes my doctor was aware. Milk alone was not enough for her and she wasn't gaining weight so he ok'd it. She was fine with it, we (Dr. & I) kept a close eye on her for the first while. Now that 2mos has gone by maybe 'food's would be ok...we'll see what Dr. says next week!

I think we need an updated pic of Ben getting into trouble..lol

I'm not trying to flame here, but are you BFing or giving formula? If you are BFing then your Dr. advice of cereal p*sses me off! There should be no reason to supplement BM. If you were not creating enough milk then Dr. should be working with you to help up your supply and not suggesting that you give something that has almost no nutritional value for a 2 month old. BF babies often weigh less than FF ones. Unless she was "failure to thrive" I see no reason for him to say that cereal was necessary so early.

Mind you, she is not my child and obviously you will decide what it best.

It just ticks me off to no end when Drs make choices that end up sabatoging BFing for baby and mom.

  • no "flame" taken :-)

and no I'm not BF...personally I never liked the idea of it BUT I was ready to do so for my baby and it turned out that Mia rejected my milk from day 1....already at the hospital the nurses were laughing at how she already was so picky and since it had been 1 day without a proper meal...we turned to formula as per their suggestion.

  • Oh my. I honestly think I would be looking for a new doctor. I can't imagine why a baby would be needed cereal at that age.

As for getting in trouble pictures should it be the "I like to put my fist in Daddy's hotdog" or "What do you mean I can't eat cat fur that I just pulled out of Louie's back?" or "Oh look stairs...lets climb them"

    My choice?

    All of the above!

  • We're doing well despite a few battles. I had supply issues initially with feeding and had to supplement C for a couple of weeks with formula. I never realized how hard BF'ing could be. It was frustrating but we persisted with an amazing support system at our hospital including fantastic lactation consultants. Could not have done it without them and DH! Now C is gaining weight like crazy and feels less and less like a newborn everyday and more just like a baby. We're really enjoying getting to know him!

  • Charlotte is doing really well.  She is rolling everywhere, sitting up unassisted and is really trying to crawl.  She is nearly 20 pounds now.  She is loving food and there hasn't been anything that we have introduced that she hasn't enjoyed.  We are off to France/Switzerland for most of June, so it will be interesting to see how that goes.

Here is a recent picture of her making her favourite face.  We call it the Stink Face.

  • Jen, you didn't update us on you and Andrew.  I love your siggy pic.  He is so handsome.  He looks a lot like you (even though I have never seen you!)

    Haha, well, since you asked.

Andrew is wonderful. He finally started sleeping through the night a couple of months ago (combo of a little bit of CIO and finally getting his own bedroom) and I can't even tell you how much that has improved my outlook. He's going to be walking any day now. This is a really fun age. His newest "trick": when I say, "Andrew, where's your nose?" he points to it. I'm loving it!

My only concern is his eating. He's a bit of a lightweight and really doesn't seem to eat very much when I give him solids, so I'm sort of dragging my feet in transitioning from formula to milk. But we'll get there. I'm trying not to stress about it.

It's great hearing that everyone seems to be doing well. These kids of ours are all so cute!

I agree with Canadian Bio, Lisa - formula has the nutrients and fat that Mia needs.  Cereal has very very little in the way of fat and calories.  She'd have to eat the whole box to make up for what formula gives her.  It's a very strange recommendation for sure.  If you're thinking of starting other foods soon, ask your pedi about avocado.  It's often suggested as a first food because it's high in fat.  That might be better for her than applesauce. Wholesomebabyfood.com has some great info.

We are doing very well.  Gavin is such a joy.  I could not have asked for a happier more relaxed baby.  He usually sleeps through the night and is just starting rice cereal.  He swims with his best friends Ben and Fiona and just last week floated on his own for the first time - as in ALL BY HIMSELF!! No mommy, no life jacket.  He LOVES the water.

He started rolling over on his own this week and started putting his knees under him to creep last week.  He giggles and squeals and completely lights up my life.

His torticollis (from being stuck in the same breech position from 19 weeks) is still an issue.  We are still doing physio 3X a day, and going for monthly physio assessments, cranial sacral therapy and chiropractic treatments.  It is difficult at times because he is just so much fun and I want to goof around and play with him.  The physio can take up to an hour a session depending on what I'm doing with him, so it ties us down.

But as a result he's strong as can be.  Beneath his chub a chub are abs of steal.  And what a chub a chub he is - 17lbs 5 oz at 4 months!!

I tried to do a PIP, but shutterfly is being stoopid!  So here's a couple of links:

  • Oh! I forgot to mention that we started EC'ing at 3 weeks and it's going so super well. I was really surprised. We definitely have more catches than misses. Though this past week, DS has started to "hold it" until we take him to the potty...and he was miserable the other day for a few hours until I suddenly realized what the problem was. So it's clearly going well though I thought we were going to do this part-time, not full-time!!!

Wow, that's awesome! I find EC'ing fascinating but I'm pretty sure I don't have what it takes to try it myself.

  • All_planned: I t hink you need to find a new peditrician right away, there is no reason at all that a baby who is on formula needs to go on rice cereal especially at 2 months old.  It makes me so angry when doctors do this, like others have stated there is zero nutrition at all in the cereal maybe she was going through a growth spurt and needed more to eat, more formula would not hurt her at all.

It's a lot easier than you think. Do you know when your baby is going? Most parents will look at their child and say "oh s/he is pooping now". And that's all it takes is that recognition...then you pop baby over the toilet. Initially I startled C into waiting when I saw his face...I'd say "wait wait" and whip him up and onto the toilet but now he waits for me to take him. Poops are super easy. Pees we're still getting there on. He still does a lot of those in his diaper but hey, we haven't even been doing this for 3 weeks.

  • That's awesome about the Ec'ing I'm glad it's working out. I never thought about it with Pey, maybe when I have a next one I will try.

Never to late to start...seriously! The book Diaper Free Baby (which you can probably get in your library) divides into sections for starting at various ages. I promise you it is so much easier than it sounds.
