Hi ladies,
We owed a lot on taxes this year. We are trying to increase our withholding to avoid owing next year.
We live in Brooklyn, I work in Jersey and DH works in the city. I pay Jersey tax in addition to NY State and City tax : |
We owed Federal and Jersey taxes. For Federal we have to change our w4 form (please correct me if I am wrong).
I also have heard that there is a W4 form for each state and that needs to be filled out/updated -- I have never filled one out. I always got one W4 form at the time of hire.
Would federal W4 form suffice?
Has anyone filled out State specific W4 form?
How does it effect the taxes?
Can you rec an accountatnt?
TIA!
WR
Re: Tax -- Living in NY and working in NJ
I live in Staten Island and work in NJ.
I do my taxes with turbo tax (or whatever program Nova has).
Both me and my husband claim 0 dependents, some people claim themselves. I usually get back from NY (very little) and NJ (not a lot either).
I don't have an accountant rec, but the computer programs work well. There is a spot to claim on NY state return that you pay to another state (or something along those lines). I have been told in the past that is should balance out. And I have never owed.
My husband used to claim 1 on his W4 and always ended up owing. When he changed it to 0, he got a refund. Now we file jointly since we don't itemize or anything like that.
