Need vacation recs

Neil and I never got a honeymoon, and in fact, haven't ever been on a 'vacation' with just the two of us.

While we are in Michigan this summer, my mom has graciously offered to keep Ryan for a couple of nights so that we can get away (eeek...I'm soooo excited).

Here's what I'm thinking. We are going with my parents to watch the Blue Angels in TC on Saturday the 3rd (Neil really really really wants to see them again), then going back to their lake for the evening. Sunday morning, get up early, head north, take our time getting to wherever we are going. Spend all day Monday on Mackinaw Island. Tuesday, get up early and take our time heading back down to my parents' house.

Neil wants to spend both nights in the same place, I was thinking somewhere between TC and Mackinaw. Money is a bit tight, so we can't afford to stay anywhere two pricey, would like to keep it to $100-$150/night, and would love a little mom and pop motel...but haven't ruled out some of the chains that are on the south side of bridge.

Any ideas/places that you really liked up that way in terms of restaurants, lodging, things to do, etc? It's been ten years since I've been to the island...

  • Are you looking to stay on the island?  Two weekends ago we were up there and had a fabulous time.  We stayed at the Chippewa Hotel for $95.  Very nice and GREAT location on the island. We biked the perimeter of the island and then the inside.  I would recommend biking the perimeter and then taking a horse carriage tour of the inside.  We had dinner at Seabiscut, good food, waiter was okay and it was somewhat pricey.  We had breakfast at the Pancake House, good food, good service and INEXPENSIVE.  The night life doesn't get started until 9:30ish, so be patient if you go out.

On our way back we stopped in Petosky and walked around their downtown area.  It was a nice downtown and would recommend stopping there.  I would also recommend taking US-31 one direction and take a less direct route the other direction.

US-31 takes you thorough Charlevoix (another cute downtown area), Petosky and Elk Rapids (stop and eat a Pearls Cajun restaurant).

If you go off US-31, you can hit Bellaire (they have a good brewery but I can't remember the name of it), East Jordan, Harbor Springs....other GREAT small towns that are so cute!

  • I don't think you'll be able to stay on Mackinac Island during the summer for under $100/night.  I was going to suggest Petoskey too.  Or, you can cross the bridge and be in St. Ignace.  Are you guys campers?

We were just on the island this weekend.  It was wonderful, but I know rates went way up after the weekend.
