So, DH and i have been lucky enough to not pay for our internet for the past 2 years. Our landlords had wi-fi and let us use it. (we don't have cable so we weren't paying for that either!) But now our landlords moved out and in to their new house a block away, meaning they're taking their wi-fi with them.
We pretty much only need the internet and i'm on the fence about cable, cuz i don't want to be hooked to the tv every night...but i also love tv!! And the home phone option is kind of a moot point since we have our cell phones.
So...do you like your internet/cable provider? Would you recommend them? Also, does anyone *just* have internet? May i ask how much you pay for just that? You can PM me if you want.
TIA!!
Re: Rec.your cable/internet provider!
Depending where you are I don't think there is much of a choice of cable companies.
It is time warner and maybe optimum in some parts of the city (but I always think it is one or the other). Now you can choose Verizon Fios...which I have heard good things about. A few friends like it, I find it a little annoying since I am so used to the menu's and guides on cable. But time warner IMO is kinda sucking...I have a HD tv and watch mainly HD channels and it is "digitized"..it gets pixelated and stutters. Sometimes the guide is messed up, it says one show is on the guide but it's not really on. Sometimes it reboots randomly. I am debating on switching to Fios, but I don't like Verizon as a company either...so I don't know.
I pay to much for cable and internet, over $100 a month, but I have a DVR box and all the movie channels. We're going to be cutting down to just HBO (YAY True Blood) since we have netflix we don't really watch to many of the movie channels.
you can get just internet with Verizon, but if Fios isn't available in your area you can only get DSL, which you have to have a phone line for...and DSL is slow IMO. I have heard rumor that earthlink will provide internet via time warner without having a cable tv package but it is expensive. It is probably worth it to just get a basic cable package and internet though cable.
Wow, great info!! Yeah, DH is finding that Verizon might be best for what we're looking for, which is just internet. We decided that cable wouldn't work for us right now...
Thanks!

I'm in Brooklyn as well, using Verizon DSL without a phone line. I bundled it with DirecTV, which DH needs for his sports
You don't need a phoneline for DSL like pp mentioned. I originally thought I did, but we have something called dryloop, you can probably request it. They charge $5 more than the regular rate, so it's about 36.99 a month for DSL alone.
I'm still waiting for FIOS to come to my area!
Interesting you can have DSL with out a phone line. In all my work with DSL over the years it has been nothing but a headache. I work on networks and would always advise against DSL. Hopefully Fios comes to your area soon. I heard Direct TV is going under...maybe that was just a rumor.
In my neighborhood there are people with 4 satellite dishes on their roofs...why is that? Can you only have a certain number of tv's per dish...
