Professional Makeup Application

So I had my trail hair and makeup for the wedding on Saturday and I have to say that I am really shocked at how much my makeup sucked a**. I paid $90.00 and I walked out looking like a hor and this was after I had asked her to tone it down and change the color of the eyeshadow. I am kind of anal in regards to makeup and went against my better judgement and booked someone else to do it so it would be one thing less to worry about. I did book it at one of E-towns higher end salon & spa. Anywho I cancelled the appointment and I am now doing it myself. I am wondering have any of you had experiences with professional makeup artists and how it turned out for you.

Re: Professional Makeup Application

  • I know some make-up pros can go overboard but I just wanted to make the point that, if you have very light make-up on, it may end making you look slightly washed out in photos. Sometimes a bit of a heavy touch is needed to make sure you look best in your pics.

There are a ton of vids on You Tube to help you, though. Kandee Johnson is a particularily fun gal to watch and she makes everything really simple. She even has one for bridal make-up that I will be using for my sis's wedding in a few weeks.

I bought the Dinair make-up she uses in the vid and it's awesome. Any airbrush foundation will work, though.

  • I don't have a ton of advice but I agree with Mel that sometimes for pictures you need a bit more of a heavy hand to loook your best.  I wish you had taken some pictures so you could see how it looked in pics.
  • Yep the makeup has to be heavy for pictures, by the time the reception roles around it will have toned down a bit.  I did my friend's wedding makeup,  I used lots when I did, however the colours I used were all soft tones.  It made it so she wasn't washed out in pictures but she didn't feel horish.  Most of the time it's the eyes that feel icky.  Try getting them to use white/cream and pink eyeshadows.  Instead of lipstick get a tinted non sticky lip gloss.

My ex-sil is an esthetician and when she was going to do my makeup for my wedding she advised me to do that. I ended up not having her do my makeup and wish she did.  My makeup looked awesome in pictures and while I am not one to shy away from makeup I felt like it was a bit much.

  • Hm, very good points ladies.

I did take a couple photographs and I just really did not like the way it looked. It was way too brown for my skin and the colors she used did not compliment me at all. Thanks for the youtube bit Mel. I did my own trial last night and then took a couple pics and I thought my version was way better.

Also, another reason for canceling my makeup for the wedding is because I am bit worried that I am not going to have the products I need to do touch ups, whereas if I do it I have all the products I need.

I am going to MAC tonight to pick up a better foundation and primer since thats the only thing I am missing .... oh and waterproof mascara.

  • Honestly, primers are the best investment I've made in my beauty routine! They really make a huge difference, even in my everyday make-up.
  • I think you are in Edmonton right???  GO TO BOBBI BROWN @ Holt!  Totally worth it.  I think its a $50.00 product commitment if I am right and you will get a trial too.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately I don't have time to swing there after my hair appt before the photographer arrives which is why I wanted to get them done in the same spot. Oh well. I am doing another trail on myself this Sunday after I go get some tips from MAC on how to make the makeup last and certain things to do for photographs.
