Cleveland Recs?

DH and I will be heading to Cleveland on the 11th. We're thinking about staying an extra day/night since neither one of us have been to Cleveland. What are some great restaurants and places to see. Dh isn't into seeing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so any other recs would be great! We're going to have Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday to see the city.

TIA!

ETA: I just googled the church we are heading too and it's actually in Brecksville Ohio, so I guess we're going to be south of the city and near Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Any recs there would be nice too!

Re: Cleveland Recs?

  • I am actually from Brecksville!  The park system is great there.  Are you staying in Brecksville or more downtown?  There is tons to do downtown.  I would recommend the East 4th St district for night time activities.  Plenty of restaurants, bars, and entertainment including the House of Blues, Pick Wick (fun!) and a Bowling Alley (jazzed up of course).

  • I spent 7 years in Cleveland before moving down here.   What kind of stuff are you into?

The Cleveland Art Museum is very good and free.  It's in University Circle, which has several other museums.  The Botanical Gardens are very good and are in the same location.  It has both indoor and outdoor exhibits.  From there, both Little Italy and Coventry are nearby.  Little Italy is pretty much what you can imagine it is - several authentic Italian restaurants, bakeries, and stores.  There are also several art galleries in Little Italy, if you're into that.  It's a cute little neighborhood.  Up the street from that is Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights.  Coventry is somewhat similar to Ludlow in Clifton, but a little more happening.  It's got several ethnic and local restaurants, bars, and random shops.  Stop into Big Fun - it's a nostalgic toy store that has all kinds of random stuff.   Also, down the street from Coventry is a cool cementary, Lakeview Cemetary, which is great to walk around.  There's several historical figures buried there - President Garfield, the Rockefellers, Elliot Ness - and lots of cool memorials.

For restaurants, the near west side (Ohio City and Tremont) is a good place to go.  Lots of hip restaurants with great food.  My favorites are Flying Fig, Fat Cats,  Farenheit, and Lolita.  If you are looking for something cheaper, go to Johnny Mango in Ohio City.  It's reasonably-priced "world cuisine" with a fun atmosphere and lots of yummy drinks.   There's also plenty of fun bars in Ohio City and Tremont.  Also, if you're in Ohio City on Saturday morning, there's a great farmer's market called Westside Market to go to.

As for downtown, there's East 4th Street that has several restaurants and bars.  Lola is supposed to be excellent - although I've never eaten in the new 4th street locale.  There's also Pickwick and Frolic, which has a comedy club, caberet, bar, and restaurant.  Personally, I think the food there is mediocre, but the other stuff can be fun.   East 4th Street is near the stadium, so if there's a game that night, beware that it might be packed.

Also downtown on West 6th is a bar district.  Honestly, it's been 4 years since I've lived there, so I'm sure half the places I went to have changed hands.  One great place to go, is D'Vine Wine Bar.  It has flights of wine and tapas.

I could go on and on about Cleveland.  If you have any specific questions, let me know.  I miss it!!!!

  • I haven't been, but Michael Symon (Iron Chef America) has a restaurant in Cleveland, Lola.  Next time we're up there I definitely want to try it!

ETA: Lolita, which pp mentioned is another one of his restaurants.

When we were up there this past winter for a Cavs game we hung out on E.4th St. before the game and had a lot of fun!

  • Wow I did not know we had so many people from Cleveland. I grew up in the Cleveland area and everyone else pretty much said everything I was thinking. The House of Blues is absolutely amazing.
