DH called the fire department (long)
When he came home from the gym tonight, I went outside to meet him, and I realized that I could hear what sounded like an alarm coming from our next door neighbor's house. I mentioned it to DH, and he agreed, and I pointed out that I could also smell something really strange. He knocked on their door and there was no answer, but we both thought that their living room looked a bit cloudy (although it was hard to tell since it's upstairs...and it could've been dirty windows). So then DH climbed onto their fence to unlock it and went onto their back porch to look through their sliding door, and he said it definitely looked smoky. So he called 911. Literally as he hit "dial," the smoke detector turned off, which he did mention to the 911 person, but they sent two fire trucks, the sheriff, and an ambulance.
The firemen broke a downstairs window to let themselves in, and they discovered that there was food left on the stove (with the burner on). Fortunately, there was absolutely no damage, and they just set up a huge fan to air out the house.
We felt kinda bad for calling the fire department for what turned out to be more or less nothing...but when our neighbor came home, he was in relatively good spirits and thanked DH for calling (better be safe than sorry!).
Turns out, as DH was talking to some neighbors (he was trying to find someone who had our neighbor's cell number), he learned that one of the houses on our street actually burned to the foundation 3 years ago...and it started with a fire on the stove. So all our neighbors thought it was good that he called!

Wow. I think you did the right thing. Who knows what would have happened if it was left on the stove longer. I would rather come home to a broken window then my house burned down.
I am always parnoid after I cook that I have left the stove on so I check it multiple times. I guess he will be checking multiple times from now on.
It is always better to be safe then sorry. I think you guys did the right thing.
i wouldn't call that 'more or less nothing'. if you hadn't of called it could've turned into a full blown fire! def. did the right thing. I'm glad you guys noticed the noise and checked it out
house fires scare me so bad..esp now that murphy is at home all day! every time i see a fire truck en route to anywhere in our neighborhood i totally panic and think it's our house!
