FYI - Mac Users - RAVE

Most of the people I went to grad school with that had Macbooks and I all had the same problem - where the front edge of the Macbook closest to me cracked all along the edge and chipped off.  I had heard if you make a Genius Bar Appointment online and take it in that they'll replace it for you for free since it's kind of a defect of the macbook.  So I took it and and sure enough they kept it over night and replaced not just the entire top plate of the Macbook but put a whole new keypad on there for free as well (if they're not backed up they won't need to keep it over night.  Gave me a 2 day quote due to being backed up and called me the same day within a few hours to pick it up).  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/  Also, my hard drive crashed (luckily I had most things backed up) and they ran a scan trying to see if it was something they could repair.  When they couldn't they popped out my hard drive and replaced that for free as well.  Makes me never want to buy anything but a Mac again, that's for sure.  Just thought I'd share if you're having any problems or want to get that annoying crack fixed - it likely won't cost anything.

  • Awesome!  Were you still under warranty and/or AppleCare or whatever it's called?  It's been so long since we bought ours (I'm going on 7 years with my PowerBook G4 and DH has had his iMac for about 3 years now).

  • Yup. The chipping is a common defect. You can also get them to change the top panel if you have discoloration (on the white macbooks). 

    I have had pretty good overall experience dealing with the geniuses. They can be frustrating if you get a bad one. You just need to be prepared with flicker sets and web pages about the problem and they will often just decide to repair it.

    The one time they would not replace something (I had a broken plug, which was a known defect), DH said very loudly and repeatedly in the store: "What do you mean you won't replace this part? It's under your warranty." He also showed the genius online where it was mentioned as being covered, online. Needless to say, I got a new plug.
