What's your doctrine?

If you were President, what rules/criteria/beliefs would govern your International Relations policy?

I have to admit this is by far my weakest area in terms of political knowledge, but I'm learning...

Re: What's your doctrine?

  • no allies with nations who are mean to bunnies!

  • I have no cohesive philosophy. I am very skeptical of our relationship with Pakistan, and I think we need to learn from our past mistakes in Afghanistan/Central Asia. I do believe in sitting down with leaders from countries that are hostile toward us. The more engagement we have, the better things will get. I think we need to lift the embargo against Cuba. I think it's just dumb. If we can have diplomatic relations with China, there is no reason we shouldn't have relations wtih Cuba.

I think my #1 criteria at this point is that whatever we do, we need an administration that will be honest with the American people. Lying to Americans to get support for war /=/ not smart policy.

What if, hypothetically speaking of course, one were to not like bunnies?

  • Treat everyone the same in all aspects of government - aid, war, allegiances, trade.  It seems to work for the Swiss, although I was surprised to see their stock market being heavily affected as well...

I would start out with this, but I would add an objective schedule of consequences.

Right now, it's okay for some nations to have nuclear weapons, and okay for others to have nuclear technology, and there's some that we just don't want to have nuclear technology period. This is rather arbitrary based on who we (and by we I mean the administration) decide is trustworthy or not.

I'd make it clear-cut. We're okay with you having nuclear technology as long as you don't do x,y, and z. We're not okay with you having nuclear weapons unless a,b, and c are met.

I know it's not that simple and there's a lot of gray, but I think a lot of our problem around the world stems from our lack of objectivity.

  • I think my doctrine would be "Progress."  This would be favoring decisions that would put the US at a technological and scientific advantage in the world.  This is where we have a chance at keeping an upper hand in the economy instead of devolving into a more insulated service economy and importing everything tangible.  I would try to make it easier for the brightest minds to come to the US and study here and hopefully keep them here.  This definitely includes developing "green" everything since that's where the future is headed.  I think the space race was kind of pointless, but the green race, if you want to call it that, is essential to our survival on this planet.  It's not just a hippie concept anymore, it holds enormous potential for profit.  I feel that being a leader in this area will help us gain more respect and economic leverage in the world and facilitate our international dealings.  Forget all this sit down and talk bullshit.  It's all about the bottom line.

And my great idea for the Middle East is to subsidize the sale of satellite dishes and make sure our pop culture is available, with subtitles.  Indoctrinate the youth with TRL and we'll seem less like the Great Satan.  This war is about hearts and minds.
