Good lord...my mom fell and broke her hip!
The woman is barely alive. She's on full time dialysis, she's got no toes left and only half a right foot, she's had 6 heart attacks and now has 6 stints in her heart, has had 2 arterial bypasses...and she fell walking to the bathroom to pee! Like, seriously, I want to laugh and cry at the same time.
They are operating tomorrow, which really concerns me as her stints were just put in a few weeks ago and they were monitoring her really closely to make sure she was stable, now this?! I'm not sure they have a choice, though

I've heard that most hip breaks (in the elderly population) are actually just caused by frail bones- so it isn't that a person falls and breaks her hip, but that her hip breaks and then she falls. Maybe that happened to your mom?
I'm sorry to hear all the health problems she has had! I've dealt with major health issues with my parents so I can emphasize with you. Hope the surgery goes well!
