NER: Worried about my kitten

Sophie stole one of Timmy's toys (a mouse on an elastic string) and she ate some of it.  Last night, it passed out of her, and it was fine.  I thought she'd eaten a hairband, actually.  I didn't find out until this morning that it was part of the toy.  Now I see MORE of the string is missing, and I know Sophie ate it; I couldn't find the missing string anywhere.

DH says not to worry since she passed it last night and didn't choke on it today, but I'm freaking out over here about it.  I live too far from work to go check on her, but do you all think I'm just overreacting?  Will she be fine probably?

The best I can do is go home an hour early.  I keep having these horrible visions of what might happen to her.   Am I completely insane?

Re: NER: Worried about my kitten

  • My cat likes to eat dental floss. Well, anything that looks like a string, actually. Unless she has a part of the toy hanging out of her bum or she starts to act funny, I wouldn't worry. If she does have toy parts hanging out of her bum, you need to get her to the vet ASAP.... don't try to get it out yourself. Apparently DIY can hurt their little intestines.
  • I think that she will be just fine. My cats have eaten some random stuff (including ribbons from wrapping paper) and they have passed it just fine.

If you notice she is not going to the bathroom or seems really lethargic then take her in, but I am sure she is just going to pass it.

  • OH NO!  Part of it was hanging out of her bottom last night, and I did take it out!  It was a short length, probably 2 inches, with only the last little bit still attached.  I didn't even know it was there.  I actually just saw that she still had a bit of poo (so sorry so gross) hanging from her bottom, and I cleaned her up.  In the process, I pulled out the string.

OMG, my poor kitten!  She's been playful, happy, and eating though.  Maybe she is okay?

  • don't worry until you see her acting different, not pooping or staring to vomit. I am sure she will be fine!

  • Ditto everyone. As long as she's eating, going to the bathroom and acting normal, she's probably fine. I know it's hard, but try not to worry!

  • I want to add to what Dev said: If she started throwing up a lot or stops eatting, take her in. When Kali was yakking for 2 days the vet thought she may have swallowed something she shouldn't have.

Also, you should leave early for your peace of mind.

  • Ok, thanks everyone.  I will definitely leave early today.  Work actually owes me an hour and a half already this week.

  • I think she was OK. My friends pulled out a 2 foot ribbon from their cat once and he was fine. I think the vets just say to take them in because there's a chance you could flark something up. I think you'd notice the effects right away if she was having any ill effects.
  • pulling it out of her ass is fine if it came out easily. If you ever see something sticking out and it wont come out easily, leave it alone until it comes out with a BM. The reason you don't wanna pull is if its long and and is being held in by the bowel muscles and such. You just wanna wait until those muscles let go of it on their own, lol.

  • Whew, ok.  Thanks, you all really did make me feel better!

  • I'm late but wanted to say I hope your kitten feels better!  And that she doesn't have poop or string coming out of her bum anymore.  And definitely go home early-I totally would for my peace of mind...
  • Thanks everyone!!  She seems to be feeling just fine, she's just got a habit of eating everything she sees!  I'm definitely feeling better and appreciate everyone's niceness!
