NER: we had a fire this morning

Everyone is fine but I don't think I have been that terrified in a looooong time.  H had a wood stove installed over the weekend so that we could try to save some money on heating the house this winter.  We've had it for three days and already a chimney fire!  The house filled with smoke and there were flames shooting out the fireplace.  He climbed on the roof with the hose and did put it out after a few minutes.  It felt like a lifetime!  I am officially a dumbass though because I ran back into it to save the animals and my wedding rings!  I put the kitty in the car with mikayla and parked her on the street.  The dogs got freaked out and ran away but came back within an hour.  It could have been so much worse so I am definitely thankful, despite the plethora of water damage in our basement right now.

Moral of the story:  I want that stove out of there!

I am not mad at that. FWIW  I know a couple people who have wood stoves and haven't had issues. Maybe your chimney just needs to be cleaned?

  • OMG I am soo glad that you are all OK!!!!! How scary. I woudl want that stove far far away.

And I would have totally run back in for the animals, so that doesnt make you a dumbass. They are family.

  • Yikes, glad you're all okay!

Nice try with the wood stove, I hate when things go terribly wrong like that.

  • yikes - sorry for the rough morning! It happens a bit up here as many people have wood stoves. you just need your chimney cleaned though. the stove is fine!

  • Wow, glad everything turned out ok! I would be terrified, too.

I'm curious, do you know how the fire started? Was the stove or its installation faulty or was it something with the chimney, like the buildup in there catching on fire?

  • Ack, scary! Glad everyone's okay.
  • How scary! I'm glad you're ok.

I would've run back for the animals, too. Wouldn't people run back into a house for their children? Same thing to me.

  • Scary! I'm so glad you're OK!
  • I'm glad you're okay.  Definitely get your chimney checked out, and get the water damage dried out ASAP to avoid mold growth.  Sorry you're having such a rough day.

  • That's terrible!  I'm really glad you're okay, and so sorry about the water damage!

Seriously, running for the animals makes you a great animal mom, not a dumbass!

  • Glad everyone's ok!  Pets are family. You're not a dummy :)
  • Thanks everyone.  I should have known y'all wouldn't think I was silly for saving the creatures.  So many people just seem like they would have left them in there.  What?!?!

Anyway.....Josh has the installation guys at the house right now trying to figure out what started it.  They took the stove out and are checking it out.  It looks like something was installed funny and leaves were getting in the floo, but we also need the chimney cleaned again.

  • omg, so glad you're all okay (pets included)!!

Was Mikayla awake when it happened or did you have to carry her out?

Oh, she was definitely awake.  We were getting dressed for school so I rushed her out to the car right away so she could stay warm.  I told her she was in charge of protecting Lilly (the new kitty), so she held the kitty in the car with her.  She is such a good girl.  She didn't even cry until after we were sure we had put the fire out because she was afraid her library book would burn and she'd get in trouble at school.  So sweet.  Thanks for asking.  ;-)

  • Aww, good thinking.  I'm sure it probably helped that she had a task, too.  I think it's a lot easier to deal with a crisis when you're doing something.
