Nose bleeds and colds (tmi?)
Does anyone get nose bleeds often and/or know something about them? DO you get them with colds? I need to ask about my issues but don't wanna gross you all out unnecessarily

Are you referring to full-on nosebleeds or just a little blood when you blow your nose?
My nose tends to bleed lightly all winter long because of the low humidity, and it does get worse when I have colds because I'm blowing my nose much more frequently. When my skin cracks on the inside of my nose, I just smear some Vaseline on my nose overnight and it helps.
BTW, I have two kids in diapers. Nothing grosses me out. :-)

right now is the prefect time for nosebleeds, and I have a cold - but I have had red or brown in my tissues for about 5 days now. Sometimes its literally a wad of brown and I guess its just alarming more than serious. I guess I'm just worried about how much it may be bleeding that may be flowing down my throat - as I am coughing too. I wish this cold would just go away. The blowing my nose and this lingering cough are my only 2 symptoms left. i don't blow hard and don't blown often either.
I think i may try the lube up the nose thing - although my sense is that this is coming from up farther than a q-tip can comfortably reach.
How do you know when its too much bleeding?
I used to get them ALL.THE.TIME. It was awful. I broke my nose when I was 10 and for about 10 years after that my nose would bleed if I just touched it wrong. So I find myself to be an expert on nose bleeds lol
I fortunately dont get them often at all anymore.
I get them when I come down with a cold. I think it's fairly common. I'd start worrying if I couldn't get the bleeding to stop after 10 minutes or so.
Odds are you would be able to tell if you were swallowing blood. Since it's only been going on for 5 days, I'm going to guess it's related to your cold and that a humidifier might help. If it goes on for a while longer, I might go see your PCP, if for no other reason than to have peace of mind that all is well.

Are you using a nasal spray at all?
I think that you are totally fine. I am pretty sure you would know if you were swallowing blood, and if you are coughing all the time blood would be coming up with any phlegm if you had it in your throat.
If your nose starts bleeding and you cannot stop it completely within 30 minutes I would call your doc. My doc would let my nose bleed for up to an hour before he would have me come in, but he may have let me go so long becuase I was a repeat customer lol
I'm not using anything right now. I might use a saline spray or stand over some boiling water or something, lol. I don't have a humidifier and I am trying to avoid that route because we found some minor mold issues on some walls when we moved in and they used the humidifier a lot and its a small house. For some reason the brown color coming out bothers me more. Glad to hear you all get them too!!!
Yeah, I think you're fine.
Instead of a humidifier I usually use tea. I just use a big, wide cup, fill it maybe half way, and keep my nose and mouth over it between sips. It's even warm and steamy in there for awhile after you've drank all the liquid. Sometimes I'll boil a pot of water and stand over it with a towel over my head, but that's kind of boring and not much fun when you're sick. Be careful - it gets really hot. Showers are also good.
