Photog opinions please...

For some time now I have been wanting a D-SLR and I made the mistake of buying DH a new point-and-shoot (Canon 12 Megapixel) for Christmas.  Now I wish I would have just sprung for the real deal.

I have some photography experience, as I own a Canon SLR (the "old fashioned" FILM version) and a few different lenses.  However, I really can't afford to spend a fortune on this.  I'm looking at the Canon Rebel T2i 18.0-Megapixel- what are your thoughts on this?  Here is a link to the specs.  I'd love to hear any feedback or other suggestions.

I'm a Canon girl for sure (my father and uncle would probably disown me if I bought a Nikon).  I guess my thought is that I should probably buy the highest Megapixel that I can afford right now and I can always upgrade later with different lenses, right?  TIA!

Re: Photog opinions please...

  • I think this is a good choice to start. I'm pretty sure this is their most recent model for the semi-Pro.

You could always get an older model as well if you don't want to spend that much $$. Like the Xsi or the X1i. Check your lenses. Your old lenses may connect on the new body too!

I am defiantly no photog but we bought the T1i and assuming it's close to that and I've actually figured it out a little and it shoots amazing pics. If I can figure this stuff out, anyone can ;) GL

  • I know I don't post a lot anymore, but thought I would offer my opinion anyway.

FWIW megapixels ONLY matter when you're blowing up a picture. It's how big you can enlarge a photo without losing the clarity. We (I work at Ritz Camera) print 24x36 from 6mp DSLRs all the time, and they come out just fine. While I don't think it's necessary to have the highest mp, it's important to have the better technology. T1i is a great camera that you will likely be able to find a little cheaper since the T2i is out now. As pp said, your old 35mm lens should work on any new Canon digital body you get. Your lenses are heavier and won't have the Image Stabilization, but they will still mount and autofocus. I HTH.

  • I'm shocked to hear that my lenses might work!  This would be freaking amazing!  I just figured that since they were not "digital" lenses, that they would be no good.

    Thanks, gals!

It's too bad I can't talk to my uncle about this stuff- he owns a camera shop (and was my wedding photog) but there is a little strife between us right now.  UGH!

You may have to buy an adapter (a cheap little metal ring thing you can find for a decent price on Amazon or eBay) and the Automatic Focus may not work, but those lenses should connect!

I'd also recommend looking into a refurbished, used, or clearance T1i over the T2i.  It's a great camera  and will be probably $100 or more less so you can spend money on a nice lens, too!  I recommend the Nifty Fifty (50mm f/1.8) or the 28-135mm IS lens (which is a kit lens that people sell for cheap!).
