Sault Ste. Marie?

MH and I are planning a quick weekend up north and I would love your thoughts on the area. It looks like it would be a good fit for us since we love to take vacations where we hike, canoe, ride, etc.

We hope to stay on the US side, but hope to do some activities in Canada.

If you've been there, would you describe it as pet-friendly? What were some of your favorite restaurants?

Thank you so much!

Re: Sault Ste. Marie?

  • Hi!

My husband actually went to college in Sault Ste. Marie, however, unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about the area.  I have been to Antler's restaurant which is probably the best known restaurant in the Soo.

I have heard that Tahquamenon Falls is a nice hiking area.  It's a bit west of Sault Ste. Marie.

If you cross into Canada, you may want to check out Searchmont.  I have been skiing there (and it's a great ski resort by midwest standards), but they may also have summer activities too.

Hopefully others here can chime in with more suggestions.  Enjoy your trip!

Kasa's right - the trails around Tahquamenon Falls are great fun. It's also very interesting to watch the Soo Locks operate. That's about the extent of my knowledge, but I'm sure that area would fit the bill for what you're looking for.

  • Thank you! The falls sounded great, but I'm happy to get more recs for them since sometimes you don't know what you're getting into with tourism recommendations vs. what a lot of people enjoy :)
