when do you call the police about noisy neighbors?

in general, with the exception of a couple of obnoxious dogs right next door, our neighbors are quiet.  the apparent frat house across the street and down one is not.  when we have the tv on, we can't hear them.  but when the tv is off, or you are in another part of the house that's quiet, you can hear them yelling and screaming as they play pool in their garage.  at what point would you call the police and complain?  hold on...

now i can hear the bass from the music they just turned on.  it's 12:30; it's the 'burbs.  they should shut up.  but i'm scared to call the police because i'm scared they will find out who called and exact retribution, although i don't know these people at all.  i really don't want to go over there and ask them "to turn it down".  ugh.

maybe i should just suck it up and turn on the fan when i go to bed and hope it drowns out the noise, but surely this bothers their next door neighbors and other surrounding neighbors?

*thud thud...thud thud...thud thud*

eta:  maybe i should go bang pots and pans outside their bedroom windows when i get up at 8 am to go the gym...

eta:  oh yeah, and their "guests" need to stop parking right up to the edge of our driveway, making it really hard to make the turn out onto the street.  yes, i am old lady [insert last name here]!

  • 10 pm to 6 am  is the general rule for quiet hours.

  • If it were a one time thing, I'd just suck it up. If it were happening all the time I would probably call the police (at that hour) and make an anonymous report. Especially now that I have a baby in the house.

I would be SO pissed if someone was making a ruckus at 6am, too.

  • I swear you live down the street from me. I see a house that does exactly what your explaining all the time. It would drive me insane. I say when it disturbs your quality of life then it's time to call.

We had a neighborhood meeting and the PD had a presentation before hand, they said they can't respond to anonymous reports! They will not disclose the information.

  • Before I read your post, my answer to your question was "after talking with them and being civil doesn't work, or after civility degenerates into threatening behavior by your neighbor."   That response is based on my own issues with a crazy, bully neighbor who has never been civil, is very threatening and calls the police on us even though our dogs live indoors and we bring them in when they begin to bark.  But obviously, you are not like my crazy neighbor and the frat house-type behavior is not ordinary suburban neighborhood behavior.

I think if I were you, I would still talk to them, but I would be pretty assertive about it.  I would hand them a print out of the city codes/ordinances pertaining to noise and parking situations,  and I would be clear about the consequences for non-compliance. (Police.)   I might even be passive aggressive and do it at a time which would be inconvenient for them, like really early in the morning, ha ha.

If you suspect underage drinking is going on, or if they are parking their cars in the wrong direction on the street, then tell the police so they don't just issue them a warning.
