Mandeville Question

I am relocating to the nola area because I got a job in Covington.  My husband and I are interested in renting in the Mandeville area.  Any recommendations?  My husband is job hunting, and if he ends up finding a job in New Orleans, is it realistic to commute from Mandeville to the city over the Causeway?  Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Mandeville Question

  • I don't live on the northshore - I'm on the southshore - but it's very common that people commute from the northshore down to NOLA for work.
  • We live in Covington and we both work in Covington.  It's not uncommon to travel but it's a drive (24-ish miles one way) just on the bridge and there's a toll but you can get a tag and save a dollar.  Another factor may be what part of the south shore he gets a job.  It may be easier to live closer to Slidell and he can take the Twin Span (a co-worker of mine does this.  Her hubby works in New Orleans East)

Personally, I wouldn't want to drive across the lake.  However, TONS of people doing.  I would just prefer to be closer to home.

  • Thanks for the info.  That's definitely how we both feel--better to live and work in the same place.  The thing will be to find him a job in the Covington/Mandeville area.  He has a Master's degree, but I feel like with the economy the way it is, he'll be at Starbuck's or something.  Hopefully we'll find him a job.
  • When I first moved to this area, EX and I bought a home in Covington... It may be cheaper for you to find rent in Covington than Mandeville... Or you can live right off of the Causeway bridge so it's an easy commute for your SO.... I have to be honest with you.. The northshore is a great place to retire and raise a family, but for us it was god awful---not much to do at all... pretty boring... and crossing the causeway everyday was not fun!... sometimes the fog was so bad, a policecar has to convoy a few cars across at a time, not to mention if there is a wreck you are HOURS late to work.  I did it for ONE semester of dental school, then quickly moved to the Uptown area and have not been back since!... It may be great for you though, it was not for me!
  • I'm a little late to this post but I agree with the PP taking the causeway every day can be a PIA both because of the toll and how often they shut it down due to the weather.
  • we live in madisonville.  My DH commutes to right on the other side in Metairie.  A New Orleans (city) commute will probably run close to an hour without traffic.  If you can afford the gas, do it.  I'd much rather live over here than in New Orleans.
