So yesterday I was going to lunch with a co-worker when the elevator in my building lurched, came to a screeching halt and went pitch black. Yep, we were dangling somewhere between floors 30 and 28 in complete darkness for about 20 minutes. None of the buttons worked either, so we couldn't ring the alarm for help or use the emergency phone...it was like the lights just went out in the elevator. I didn't have my cell phone, but my co-worker had hers so we used that for light and called our office but the calls wouldn't go through we could only get emergency (911) calls to go out. Apparently we were trapped in some elevator alternate universe where cell phones are useless. I am normally a very calm person but had I been in there 5 more minutes I think I would have lost it. 20 minutes later we see a flash light on top of us and hear banging. The firemen had to use some kind of contraption to pry the doors open and get us out! Cute firemen though! I work on 30 so unless I want to climb about 3000 stairs everyday, I have to take the elevator.
My biggest fear is free falling in an elevator and for a second I thought this was my greatest fear being realized and put into motion. So it got me thinking....what is your biggest fear and how would you react if faced with it?
I did learn something valuable though...never leave without your cell phone. Had I been in there by myself, I wouldn't have been able to call anyone or even have light. Scary!
