Beginner Bike Suggestions

DH and I are in the market for bikes.  We are planning on doing riding on paved paths (not mountain biking since I'm a wuss) for some exercise, but nothing competitive.  We were hoping to spend under $200 (possibly more around $150) for each bike- not sure if that is possible to get a good beginner bike.  Any suggestions on what we should be looking for?  Or places to visit?  Any specific brands or styles that would be better?

Re: Beginner Bike Suggestions

  • Do you have any REIs or Performance bikes near you?  Any friendly neighborhood bike shops around?  Check those places first--the two chains I mention will most likely have the lowest prices on brand new bikes, but the neighborhood bike shop may have a slightly used bike that could work as well.  About the only thing I would recommend would be to avoid any big multi-sport chains like sports authority, target or toys r us--they don't know how to build a bike correctly and sure as heck won't give you any sort of warranty or help if something breaks down or doesn't "seem" right.  Your budget will be tight for a brand new bike, but a good deal could be had.

There are some really cute cruiser kinds of bikes, or possibly a hybrid if it's most comfortable or friendly for you.  For the kind of riding you are talking about, I always say to make sure it's comfortable and that you like it (pretty color or something else that stands out about it to you.)  Don't be afraid to ask to take a potential bike for a ride around the parking lot, or around the block if it is applicable.  You want to make sure you are happy with it.

Good luck and let em know if you need any other help!

  • I was just doing some more research and found that a Performance bike shop just opened up around the corner from us.  I think we might head over there tonight! Thanks for your advice!  I would have never thought to take a test drive!  I'll keep you updated!
  • I'd second Performance Bike. Let me know what you end up with because I have been looking for one as well. Good luck!

  • I think Terp was also looking for a bike (if I'm not going crazy), so maybe we should try to get some bulk discount!  I'll see if I can work any deals for us tonight! Wink
  • There's an REI in Crossroads too.
  • You will pay an arm and a leg at Performance....just FYI. Also, yes target/walmart bikes will fall apart if you ride them like you're training to be a cyclist.  If you ride it once or twice every few weeks it will last as long as you keep it from rusting haha.  DH is a cyclist and his first suggestion was performance as well but when we went there I couldn't find a decent road bike for under 600 bucks.  Just realize how much you'll be riding it before you spend a ton of money! REI is a good suggestion too and you can usually find a good middle of the road bike.
