banking

We're looking into opening our new bank account.  I currently bank with BofA and I hate them so I'm closing that account anyways and HH banks with a tiny credit union so we're looking to start together somewhere new.  Any suggestions or banks that you recommend? TIA!

Re: banking

  • I have only ever used a credit union. I have BECU which is amazing, but I think it's only in Washington. I think credit unions tend to be better to their customers. Check out bankrate.com it can tell you different banks interest rates.
  • I have BofA, which I agree isn't so great.  DH uses Chase which he seems to like.

  • I use Wachovia and love them. They're wonderful. But my husband and I have a joint account through USAA... but that's for current military members and veterans + family. They're great to fwiw
  • I have always used US Bank and haven't had any problems. DH uses a credit union but they only have three locations in the entire state, none of them where we moved to lol. He has it open to finish paying off a car loan but he switched most of his major banking to US Bank as well and hasn't experienced any problems. And the good thing....they are everywhere!

  • I prefer credit unions. Thats about all the imput I have for you.
  • We use Fifth Third Bank. They're really good to work with, we have our mortgage through them. I still have an account at a credit union I had before HH and I got together (I still use my credit card through them). HH used Suntrust before switching and he had nothing but problems with them. I really suggest Fifth Third if there's one in your area.

  • We use Citizens and PNC and both are great.

Hayley, I'm not sure why I never realized before that you're a Washingtonian.  I am in Vancouver, almost to Portland, OR.  My aunt & uncle used to live in Puyallup.

Ashleyanne, I was Washington Mutual before they went under & became Chase.  I DETEST Chase now, their fees for EVERYTHING are completely outrageous.  The only (and I mean ONLY) 2 reasons I kept that account is because I've had it for about 12 years now, and I figure that a lengthy banking relationship is good when we want to apply for a home loan, and because my kids' child support payments are direct deposited in that account, and I just haven't gotten around to changing it yet.

Matt & I opened an account last summer with a local credit union.  I think you tend to get better rates, better returns, all that good stuff with a CU.  I think I have maybe 3-4 transactions anymore in my Chase account, per month.  Good luck deciding!

  • I've been with the Credit Union here, but we did have a joint account with SunTrust which wasn't great. and HH had BofA for a long time until he switched to SECU.  BofA charged him a lot of fees, especially with the old student credit card he had and the interest on it.  It's nice to have our joint checking and our personal accounts and savings accounts all in one bank.  Our mortgage is through BofA, and they charge fees to use their online payment, so we just do bill pay through our bank.

  • I have Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) and I have not once in the 6 years I've been banking with them had a problem with them. Right now we haven't done anything with getting our finances at the same bank, but we will when we finally get moved into our house. We each have our car payment through SECU and haven't had any issues with them either. GL deciding!

  • I feel like I have a ton of accounts. My husband and I have a joint account at Chase. He deals with this account, my name is on it, but I never deal with them.

We have a joint account at a local credit union, and I have my own account at that credit union. I have never had any complaints.

I also have an ING direct account for some long term savings (their interest rate is higher)

BTW I have to change my name on all of these accounts UGH!

  • I have Chase & I really like it. But my HH was grandfathered in  from Wash Mut so we dont have any fees or anything. I used to have Wells Fargo and hated every minute of it. Chase is much better. My HH used to have a Credit Union account when he was in college and seemed to like it but I cant give any personal input on CUs.
  • i have been with wachovia for over 10 years and have never ever had any issues with them.

i would never bank with BofA. they lost a friend of mines money by depositing it into the wrong account and proceeded to tell her she had to wait 10 days for them to research it before they would give her a refund! needless to say she contacted the ceo's office and had her refund and closed her account that afternoon.
