Re: California bans free plastic bags

  • That's awesome!  I hope it passes as easily as people think it will.  I'm completely on board with this.

I'm already plotting on how to improve it.  Wink  I think charging people 10 cents a bag would be better than 5 cents.  Then, if the people bring their bag back to the grocery store to be recycled they can get 5 cents back, like you'd do with a can of pop or a bottle of beer.  Most places I've lived don't allow plastic bags to be put into the normal recycling, so maybe this would encourage people to save the bags they have to buy (because they forgot their normal reusable ones) for recycling.

  • I am all for this!! Now let do this nationwide!

It drives me crazy when the cashier puts it in a plastic bag before I can say I don't one or they doesn't listen... and when I try to give it back they throw it away

  • It has been like that here for a little while and I think it has been great for reducing the use of plastic bags!
  • Yes This is a great idea!  It's a win-win:  Lower costs for the grocery store, and less waste.  I think all states should do this.

  • I think getting rid of plastic bags is fantastic.  I don't think it should be a law though.  I think businesses should just choose to do this because they care about the environment.

Well yes, that would be ideal.  But I can count on one hand the number of stores that actually do this and I live in a very eco-friendly place.  If this will get other retailers to phase out their plastic bags and make consumers more aware of how many they're using I'm on board.  And let's be honest here: if consumers always brought their own bags to the store, there would have never been a need for businesses to provide plastic bags in the first place.

  • I wish other states would adopt more of California's open-minded initiatives. I think this is a great idea!! In fact, even people who don't give two s**ts about the environment should use re-usable bags instead of plastic - they are stronger and can hold more,
  • Good! Target gives a 5 cent credit for each bag that you bring in on your own - but unfortunately, I think having a charge for plastic bags is the only way to really encourage people to bring their own bags.

  • I really hope this sparks more states to do the same!!!

  • But I re-use plastic bags for trash! Safeway bags for cat litter (cat feces transmit parasites that are harmful to marine mammals, so it has to go in the trash), Target bags for small trash cans.  Are paper bags really any better for the environment?

Actually some water treatment facilities (such as mine) utilize filter systems that do filter harmful organisms transmitted by cat feces.  That said, the litter still can't be flushed.
