Beginner Bike Suggestions
DH and I are in the market for bikes. We are planning on doing riding on paved paths (not mountain biking since I'm a wuss) for some exercise, but nothing competitive. We were hoping to spend under $200 (possibly more around $150) for each bike- not sure if that is possible to get a good beginner bike. Any suggestions on what we should be looking for? Or places to visit? Any specific brands or styles that would be better?
Re: Beginner Bike Suggestions
Do you have any REIs or Performance bikes near you? Any friendly neighborhood bike shops around? Check those places first--the two chains I mention will most likely have the lowest prices on brand new bikes, but the neighborhood bike shop may have a slightly used bike that could work as well. About the only thing I would recommend would be to avoid any big multi-sport chains like sports authority, target or toys r us--they don't know how to build a bike correctly and sure as heck won't give you any sort of warranty or help if something breaks down or doesn't "seem" right. Your budget will be tight for a brand new bike, but a good deal could be had.
There are some really cute cruiser kinds of bikes, or possibly a hybrid if it's most comfortable or friendly for you. For the kind of riding you are talking about, I always say to make sure it's comfortable and that you like it (pretty color or something else that stands out about it to you.) Don't be afraid to ask to take a potential bike for a ride around the parking lot, or around the block if it is applicable. You want to make sure you are happy with it.
Good luck and let em know if you need any other help!
I'd second Performance Bike. Let me know what you end up with because I have been looking for one as well. Good luck!
