***Christine*** Greece ??
Have you gone to Greece yet? My DH and I are leaving June 26th and I was hoping to get some advice from you on what do see and where to go. Right now we are going to Athens, Santorini, Crete and then hoping on a 5 day cruise with Louis Cruise Lines.
Did you go to Mykonos? If so, would you recommend spending time there? We are debating on spending 4 days in Santorini or spliting it to 2 in Santorini and 2 in Mykonos. from some of the reviews I have seen, it seems Mykonos is mostly know for its night life, but not much else. Any information you have would be awesome.
Re: ***Christine*** Greece ??
Hi! Thanks for reminding me to give you the 411 on our trip to Greece. We went to Athens, Mykonos, Olympia, and Corfu. I'd love to go to Santorini as I hear it is THE most beautiful Greek Island that there is. (The reason we didn't go there is b/c cruise itinerary that went there didn't stop in Athens).
Athens - Absolutely amazing! There was no rioting or trouble at all in Greece. We were worried that there may not be public transportation running so ended up hiring a private taxi (Paul of Athens Taxi). Had I known the trains were running I would have done that (and for much cheaper!) instead. Go to the Acropolis early because it gets REALLY hot and crowded. It was only the beginning of May and early morning when we went and we were already dying of heat. Wear comfortable walking shoes! Definitely check out the New Acropolis Museum. While you can't take any pix inside it's where all the cool stuff from the Acropolis was taken to be housed and it's inexpensive.
Mykonos - Scenic but I've seen better beaches. We took the public bus for like 1.50 euro or something to Paradise Beach. It's supposed to be super famous but honestly I found it disappointing - the sand was pebbley and there were rocks in the water. The water was very clear blue and pretty but cold when we went...should be warmer for you. Be aware that if you take the bus it only departs once an hour (and I think they skip 3PM). I heard Super Paradise Beach was nicer. A couple of our cruisemates rented a scooter for really cheap...20 euro maybe? They highly recommended it to get around town easily and inexpensively. We were too chicken. Afterward we walked around town pretty quickly...did some souvenier shopping, saw the windmills, and ranomly ran into the giant pelican (their "mascot") walking around town. I can't comment on the nightlife as we were only in port until about 6PM. I do hear it is notorious for that (and their nude sun bathers - we didn't see any...all tourists!), though.
If you are looking for something extra to do, maybe spend a night in Mykonos and also take a ferry to Delos. I wanted to do this but decided we were all "ancient ruin"ed out from both Athens the day before and Olympia coming up the following day. Our cruisemates went and said it was really neat and not to be missed by anyone that loves Greek Mythology and history!
