Is my Rx killing my sex life?

I started taking Lexipro for anxiety right around the time I got married (last summer) and we went from having sex 2-3 a week to about once a month, if that.  I am thinking about going off of it, because I don't want to be like this, but I have very little sex drive and H isn't exactly doing anything to get me excited to crawl into bed.  I'm having a hard time evaluating the pros and cons of the medicine.  Does anyone have experience with this?

Re: Is my Rx killing my sex life?

  • Yep, that sounds like Lexapro all right.

  • Yep.  Talk to your doc about trying a new anti-depressant.  They all have side effects, usually sexual, but some work better for some people than others.

I switched from Lexapro to Effexor, and things are much better now, for example.  It can take awhile to find one that really works for you, but I think you should give each med. about 3 months before switching - your body has to adjust.  Your doc can help.

  • You can also talk to your doc about adding Wellbutrin if the Lexapro is working really well for you and you don't want to change it. Wellbutrin can combat the sex drive decrease that often comes with Lexapro.
  • I guess I do need to talk to my doctor, she just never seams that interested.  I always like to hear what people experiencing the same thing have to say!  So thank you!
  • zoloft has helped me tremendously with anxiety (50mg), and I still have a sex drive.
  • My wife is on the same medication, and it has the same effect. Talk to your doctor.
  • Well I'm glad it's not just me.  I just feel bad for my husband!  Zoloft might be the way to go, I'll ask the doc.  Thanks everyone!
  • I had the same side effect on Lexapro with Wellbutrin. I then decided to go off all my meds but, I have to watch my diet and exercise so that I don't get to anxious or depressed. It's hard work but, I feel so much better after 2 and half weeks I noticed a big difference on how I felt and now 6 mo. later I continue to feel and look better.

Good luck on what ever you end up doing!

If your doctor "never seems that interested", I would get a new doctor!

  • Absolutely.  Talk to your dr. about substituting another med.  He could be doing more to get your excited too.  I take other meds that can affect my sex drive, but my hubby knows sometimes it takes an extra minute or 2 to even get me in the mood.  It's not your fault for trying to better your life. (I'm assuming you are suffering from simple depression?)  There are other meds out there that can take less of a toll on your sex life.  Also, it helps to have a toy around :)
  • i took it for about a year after my daughter was born.  When i started dating my husband i noticed that i didn't have a sex drive.  i didn't associate it with the Lexipro unitl i went off of it and after a couple of weeks my sex drive returned.
  • Agreed, lexipro killed my sex drive as well. If your doctor seems not interested in what you have to say, find a new doctor.

this exactly!  they should be very interested in what you have to say.  On another note, I was on zoloft for anxiety and didn't have any sexual side effects.

  • Please don't stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor! It can be extremely dangerous. I switched from Zoloft (100 mg) to ranging doses of Lexepro and my sex drive isn't awesome at 50mg of Lexepro and 300 mg of Wellbutrin, but it is so much better than being on Zoloft or being depressed!
