Strawberry jam- fail :(

http://www.recipezaar.com/recipe/Classic-Strawberry-Jam-173677

I tried this recipe, and cooked it longer than suggested.  So after it didnt firm/thicken up, I added a packet of gel pectin.  No improvement :(

I went ahead and canned it, and figured it could be used as a strawberry syrup for waffle/pancakes/ ice cream, etc.  I did spread some on toast and YUM is it good just not jam LOL.

Re: Strawberry jam- fail :(

  • Oh no, I'm sorry. Do you have any more strawberries left to try a new recipe? I don't think you can ever go wrong with All Recipes if you find a highly rated one. I always go there and go with the highest rated and nothing has turned out bad yet!
  • Oh no! sorry it failed. :( glad it's still yummy!

I used all of the strawberries :(  I will try again this summer with another fruit and hope I get jam next time.  Im going to give the strawberry syrup for gifts come christmas.  I will just add some pancake or waffle mix with it :)
  • Oh no. That stinks! I've had that happen with apple jelly. Have you tried making freezer jam? I used the recipe on the pectin package for the strawberry freezer jam, and it worked great! It's easier than regular jam too.

I have never tried freezer jam before- Im new to canning :)

Do you ever give the freezer jam as gifts?  (This is mostly the purpose of my canning this summer to stock up for Christmas gifts since we are on a super tight budget this year).

  • I haven't, but it would be fine. It stores in the freezer for up to a year and in the fridge for 2 or 3 weeks. I'd just include that on the label.
