So sorry I've been absent lately... The Nest wouldn't let me post on Thur or Fri. :-(
Anyway, DH and I have been very dilligent for the past 3 years with our budget, following the Dave Ramsey program to get out of debt. We started paying it down in January 2007, but were not able to pay much because we paid for most of our wedding ourselves (with cash), but we did what we could. We were able to really hit it hard in January 2008, after the wedding. We've had some setbacks along the way, but as of this past Friday, DH and I can finally say...........
WE'RE DEBT FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously this does not include our house, but that's "acceptable" debt, although we do plan to start tripling our mortgage payment sometime in 2012, once we have bought 2 new (used) cars with cash and built up a large emergency fund.
I know this may not be something everyone can relate to, and may not be a priority for some, but it was a huge burden to DH and I for so long, and I can't tell you how exciting it is to look back and see that all the hard work, saving, and foregoing some things that other people get to do is ALL worth it! So to anyone who has debt or feels bogged down, you CAN get out from under it. I promise!
Re: WE FINALLY DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats! That's awesome
We are the other "wrong" way around (we have debt in school loans, and little credit card debt - BUT we dont have car or house debt!!!!). Once DH finds a job, I hope we can get rid of the student loans too!
My little brother downloaded his podcasts and listens to them all the time
I think that's the norm, and it's exactly where we were until we bought our house last July. We hadn't planned on buying, but things just kind of fell into place and it happened, and it was seriously the best decision we ever made, even thought it means a 100 mile round trip commute M-F.
Don't get discouraged!
House debt is a good thing! I just wish we could get rid of the student loans- those pesky things!! LOL, then we would be completely debt free. DH & I decided to buy our house right before we got married, and are so blessed to not have to make a house payment each month especially right now, with the job market the way it is! I recently have been thinking about selling my car (and that would help to pay some of the student loans and give more relief money for us to live off of right now), since I hardly use it and it's in very good condition, but DH is against the idea.
Thanks for the encouragement
girl, you know i'm totally feeling your excitement right now!!!! paying off debt is such a huge goal and can take years even when you are super aggressive. it's really hard to stay motivated to see it through. i'm SO happy you guys are done! I know you'll have your house paid off in no time making those kind of payments.
we're right behind you. i can't wait for the day when we can yell that from the rooftops too!
so when are you calling ol' dave? we can't see you live, but i'll be sure to look for that episode on hulu!
I think we're taking off work on 6/18 (next Friday), so we'll call his radio show then. I will definitely let you know for sure though. Can't wait!!
That is great Bev!! I know that you guys have been working so hard on getting that debt paid off and I am very proud of you.
Right now we have our house debt but we are actually are paid up until February but we are paying on it every month so hopefully that will make a dent in it.
We have credit card debt because of fertility stuff but our interest is very low and we are paying as much as we can each month on it so hopefully that will be paid off within a year.
It does feel good not having debt and I am very proud of you guys!
oh, the radio show. i can listen to that! (dh listens every day) remind me. i wanna hear him give yall praises
Super jealous
But SO happy for you!!! Congrats! Are you doing anything to celebrate?
I can't wait till I can post my "We finally did it" post in about the year 2025...lol
We had planned on treating ourselves to dinner at Longhorn, our favorite, but now we're like, "hmmm... I don't wanna spend the money!" hahaha. I mean, it's in the budget, it's fine, but it's still expensive because we like to go all out with apps, steaks, etc.
