incredibly stupid pet peeve

You know what annoys me? When people salt their food before they even taste it. My ILs are coming over for dinner and they always - always - put salt on their food before they try it. (I don't eat super salty food, but it's not undersalted either, so it's not like I serve really bland meals and they just automatically know that they'll need to add salt.)

And yes I know this is incredibly petty and you're probably rolling your eyes right now, plus it's not like they're trying to insult my cooking (they do the exact same thing at home with food they've made, which I don't understand - why not just add more salt to the recipe if you both like food on the salty side?), but it annoys me. Dude, I slaved over that dinner - at least taste it and try to appreciate the damn recipe before you dump salt all over it! Stick out tongue

Re: incredibly stupid pet peeve

  • I don't think you're being petty.  Since you said they do it for every meal, I would guess putting salt on their food is more of a habit now than something they do for taste.  Maybe next time you make them dinner, you can do the old prank where you unscrew the salt shaker.  You may get some satisfaction seeing them pour a pile of salt on their food.  :-)
  • My Dad always puts pepper on his food. It also drives my Mum crazy. I feel your pain!
  • I take pride in thinking I'm a good cook and it pisses me off when peeps use condiments before tasting.  I say something and the response I ALWAYS get is, "It's a habit."

My DH puts steak sauce or BBQ sauce on all steaks...drives me batty since I grill awesome cuts of meat...grrr.

    I feel your pain! Angry

  • That's pretty annoying.  DH has a peppering habit but he won't do it to food someone made, only at restaurants where the person who made it can't see Stick out tongue
  • Not petty at all.  I was taught growing up that this really rude, and an insult to the cook.  It would bother me as well if I had cooked for someone and they did this.  Salting after tasting?  No problem.  But not before.

me too!!  DH drives me nuts.  He ALWAYS adds something to his meal.  But it's almost worse b/c he tastes it first so I always ask what is wrong with the food and he says nothing, it's good but he just always eats[this dish] with hot sauce/soy sauce/bbq sauce. grrr.

back to OP - my ILs are salt fiends too.  MIL has lived with us for 3 weeks now and I'm always astounded to see what new way (adding salt, condiment (esp. mayo), or butter) she can find to make my healthy meal as unhealthy as possible.  Then she still pats herself on the back for eating healthy.  Indifferent

I think this is probably exactly why it bothers me. I was taught the same thing, so even though I know that the ILs aren't trying to offend me when they pour salt all over everything, I still can't help feeling that way a bit.

  • i just don't understand it. what if it's salty already?

it just doesn't make any sense.
