I almost lost a center diamond

I'm so frustrated.  I ran my finger nail along the edge of my ring today and one of the main center stones majorly shifted.  I can't imagine how long it would have stayed in if I hadn't noticed it.  If one of the diamonds fall out, the potential for all of them to fall out is great.  I've had SO many issues with my engagement ring in 3 years.  I've actually had it replaced TWICE because of issues.  I'm at my wits end.  I love my ring, and I don't want to go with something else, but I'm to the point where I'm afraid to wear it.  I actually don't even wear it on a regular basis, and wear a second set I have when I'm at work and out and about so I don't know why the stones keep getting loose.  I only wear my original set when I get dressed up.  I'm so angry with the jeweler I could scream.  I'm taking it to a different non-chain store on my lunch to see what their opinion is on trying to get it fixed properly.  I'm seriously considering having the diamonds in my e-ring reset in a different setting.  I'm so glad I caught it.  I would be beside myself if I lost one.  I'm already trying not to cry at work as it is!

  • I'm sorry. Sad That would be really frustrating. It might be a little more of a drive than you want to do for lunch, but DeVries Jewelry on Leonard and 131 is great. My parents have used them for the past 30+ years, and have always had a good experience. They are locally owned, and I'm sure they would be able to take a look at it, and fix it if that's what you want. Where did you get it from originally?
  • That sucks. Did you get a warranty w/ your ring or do you have insurance on it?

I get my ring checked every 6 months... under my warranty if there are any lose stones/prongs, they fix them for free. And, as long as I keep getting it checked, if a stone DOES fall out it is replaced for free.

If you don't have that, you can get a jewelry ride on your home owners insurance that will replace lost stones.

However, either way I would definitely take it somewhere to get checked. My mom had some loose prongs on a ring and took it to the chain store the ring came from and they wanted a ridiculous  amount to fix it. She went to the small jewelry store in the strip mall by Monellis and had fantastic service and a great price. Try there.

If you hardly ever wear your ring and the stone get that lose, there is definitely something wrong.

I got it from Fred Meyer originally.  I'm taking it to Russell and Ballard today (also locally owned) and they're just down the road from my work.  My IL's have been doing business with them for years and Nick's step dad knows the owner some how.  I'm kicking myself for not getting a rings from R&B originally.  I don't know what I was thinking.

I do have the insurance and I get it checked religiously.  Even when I'm at the mall shopping between 6 month visits.  I just don't want to be living in fear of losing a stone even if it is covered and having to always take it in because there's a problem with it.  That place by Monelli's is Russell and Ballard actually :-)

  • Is it an unusual setting or the jeweler not setting them properly? Either way I would take your ring to a different jeweler and have them set in a new ring. If its not an unusual setting that would somehow be more at risk for the diamonds falling, see if they can recreate it. Maybe you could get it in platinum prongs since gold can be soft. Otherwise, don't feel guilty for getting an entirely new setting. You are still using the same diamonds. I plan on changing my setting in the future when I get tired of my current one.

That's a good question and one I hope to get answered today.  Maybe they will tell me it is a difficult or unusual setting and I'll get it reset into something more stable.

  • A couple of years ago my center stone was making a "noise". I needed to have the tips redone. At the end of last year it looked like the prongs were wearing down again. The store had the whole head replaced with a thicker head. Anytime I'm in the mall I always stop to have mine checked because I don't want something to happen to them. I hope you were able to get something figured out with yours.
