Does anyone bike around NYC/ Queens

My bike didn't fit on the trailer to move 6 years ago. Much less did I know where to put it in a studio apt. But now we have a 2 br in Bayside and maybe I can leave it by the door for the summer and then store it away in my husband's business' storage for the winter.

Just wondering if anyone does bicycle around nyc-- Where and if they have any tips. I want to go shopping this weekend to look for something comfortable. Not racing here, just pleasurable exercise. Any store ideas?

Thanks

Re: Does anyone bike around NYC/ Queens

  • My husband does! He does triathalons so he does a lot of training.  Some easy local places are the stretch down the Cross Island, and the trails in Cunningham park.  But usually he drives out to Nassau county and bikes there.  He just did a long ride down Northern Blvd this weekend but he started further out east.

  • My H bikes to work (~11 miles) in nice weather.  He does some general riding around as well.  I had a bike in college but don't have one now.  He's itching for me to get a bike so we can ride together.  As for stores, we go to the store near us in Forest Hills on Queens Blvd, Spin City.  They have always been helpful there. It's where I would buy a bike if and when I do.

Forest Park has some bike paths (closed off roads).  H says they're ok.

I hear there are trails in Kissena Park connected by a route to Flushing Meadows Park. Haven't looked into it beyond that.

This might have more info: Queens Bike Map.

  • DH and I got bikes early last year and we love them! I can't ride this summer - doctor's orders - and I miss it so much! I'm not a ton of help to your questions because I bought my bike online and DH got his at a bike shop in our neighborhood and we do all our riding in Manhattan, but I still wanted to respond to say I highly recommend getting a bike!

Also, in the summer, I would definitely suggest a ride to Governor's Island. It just opened and there is a free ferry down by the Manhattan-side Staten Island ferry terminal. Once you get over there you can ride all around to explore and they have great picnic areas. It was really one of our most fun rides. GL!

  • Oh, I didn't realize you were asking about stores too  - there is Robert's Bike Shop on Francis Lewis Blvd and about 33rd ave in Bayside.  My DH goes there a lot.
