I had a bit of a bad week.

I posted this yesterday, and so far it looks like I'm the one who needs to apologize.

Re: I had a bit of a bad week.

  • Ouch.  I'm sorry you guys are going through this, but realize you may not get to a starting point without an apology to at least re-start the conversation.

What if the shoe were on the other foot?  What would you want to happen then?

  • To be honest I would apologize for hurting his feelings, whether you meant to do it or not.  And then try to begin a conversation by asking him to explain his career path and his goals.  Maybe that way he can see that you are trying to understand his side and he won't be as defensive.  With my DH in another industry, it is hard for me to understand how certain things are considered a good career move.  But as he explained how it worked and what is considered "good" experience, it started to make more sense.

These sorts of things are always sticky and never fun.  I would just suggest trying to talk through it as soon as possible so it doesn't keep brewing and turn into something bigger than it already is.  GL!!!

  • Yeah, I have really been considering to retry this converstaion, somehow I really don't know how it got out of hand.  I'm so ashamed that we are going through this.

I was thinking of cooking up his fave meal and talking about it again over dinner.  I'll have to feed the kids before we eat just incase anything else happens.lol.

  • I wouldn't be ashamed--every relationship worth having will have it's rough spots.  The argument may be different, but I'm sure most of us have had our moments with our spouses.  Good luck to you guys.

If you do decide to cook his favorite meal as a treaty of sorts, please remember that an actual apology REALLY goes a long way.  Make his favorite meal, give him the loving that he likes, but an "I'm sorry I hurt you" is really worth its weight.

you may also want to google and look up "fair fighting" in an effort to try and make some progress and come to a solution that works for both of you.  Maybe the reason he keeps job hopping is because sales/CS is the only thing he knows, but he'd much rather be doing something else--and if he could figure out what he'd really like to do or work for a company that he really likes, day in and day out for years and years, he'd stop jumping ship.  I'm no expert by any means, but my guess is that the real answer isn't just as simple as "get a job and stay with it."

Like I said, good luck with the situation!  I hope you guys work it out.

Don't be ashamed.  We all have miscommunications that get out of hand.  All of your communication can't go flawlessly.  This is an opportunity to improve your communication for the better in the future.  Whenever DH and I are in a situation like this, we always try to find something each of us can approve upon in the future.  For example, maybe he should try to not be as defensive about his job and really focus on listening to what you are trying to say.  And maybe you could try to be more sensitive when discussing his job because now you know it is a hot button issue.  Really you should try to improve on whatever was the root cause of the communication mishap.  This has really worked well for DH and I.
