Surprise Party
Has anyone ever thrown a surprise party? If so, what was your experience?
I'm playing with the idea of throwing the hubby a surprise birthday party. Any advice/tips appreciated!

hahaha. are you having a theme or 'look' for the said party?!? or are you just wanting like a backyard bbq, laid back type thing? do have a plan to keep casey elsewhere while you get everything ready??
for my sil, her party was the same day as the superbowl. haha. i did a whole 'cocktail hour' party with tall cocktail tables setup in the living room, tons of colored balloons, and fancy-ish snacks, drinks, mini cakes. then in the family room we had a superbowl party setup with a buffet and football theme decor. her bf was a great help and did sooo good at not telling. he told her that morning that he had to drive across town to go exchange a jacket and that there was only one store that had his size. hahaha. she went with and we 'broke in' to setup. most guest arrived a good 30 mins before she got there - so thank goodness we had pently of food and drinks to go around.
Wow your SIL's party sounds amazing, you did such a great job! I really love the theme too.
I haven't thought about any themes yet, most likely we'll go with laid back BBQ. And I'll have to recruit his BF and/or brothers to get him out of the house.
His bday is August 11, which is a Wednesday, so I'd like to have the party the Saturday before.
My mom just said surprise birthdays are for milestone years, is that true? He's turning 20 (not exciting at all), but when he's 21 we'll prob head to Vegas for the weekend...

We've only ever done surprise parties for milestone years in my family (16, 18, 21, 30.. etc) but you can really do them for whatever you want..
Surprise parties are a lot of fun! I am throwing one for my husband for his 40th, though we have a few years for that (4 to be exact... hahah)

I threw one for my DH's 30th.
Sometimes people refer to 30 as the "dirty 30"So I thought, whats dirty? Pirates. So I threw a pirate themed surprise party.
I had tons of help. My sister let me keep all the decorations and food at her house. I did the cake prep (A priate ship) at my friends house.
Me, The hubs and his whole family went out to dinner. I gave my sister a key to the house, she and about 5 other people snuck in and totally decked the place out. Let in all the guests and waited for our arrival.
After dinner, I blind folded DH and told him the night wasnt over (to give his fmaily time to get to the hosue)....He thought we were going to a hotel to "DO IT" so he says... or something. I drove him all around Phoenix until he had no idea where we were. Then I parked on a side street and took him through our alley and in through the back gate to totally throw him off track. Everyone was standing on the back poarch waiting for us and yelled surprise.
He had NO IDEA! Everyone came dressed as pirates (and those that didnt I had extra eye patches and pirate hats waiting) and I had costumes waiting for us to change into to. One of our friends does side show performances, I had him blow 30 fire balls for DH! I also had a DJ there to spin!
Its not really any more work then planning a normal party, you just have to find places to stash stuff other then your house and hope everyone keeps their mouth shut!
Wow that sounds really awesome, thank you for sharing! I'm really excited to do something like this now. Too bad there's nothing exciting about turning 20, lol.
PS - I am totally going to blindfold him, and use your "the night isn't over" line. I was clueless as to what to say when I whipped out the blindfold.

I looked on weather.com, and average temps are 105 degrees. And since the party will be inside and outside the house (b/c its not nearly big enough for this big of a crowd), I'm thinking this party can't start before 6-7 pm.

I threw a surprise party for a random year for an ex BF, and my DH threw one for me last year.
I dont have much to add other then, it really isn't that much more work, like PP have said.
Though I have to say, I started to get pissed off, and was in tears last year on my birthday because my BFF didnt call/text- ANYTHING and I didnt hink I was going to see her that day. I walked in, they said, "surprise", and I looked at her and started crying saying, "I thought you forgot!".
It was great- to get me out of hte house, DH sent me to the spa
