This will be disjointed but I had a few thoughts/experiences relating to our presidential visit yesterday.
First, did you all see the boy who fell asleep behind Obama during his speech? HILARIOUS! I can't link to the video right now but it is spectacular. I alternate between giggling and feeling bad for him/his parents...I hope he isn't the type to get too embarrassed.
Did anyone see the military helicopters or Air Force One flying overhead? We spent a lot of last night camped out by the airport. XN's fascinated with airplanes and military aircraft, so of course he just HAD to see Air Force One. The jerks at FedEx parked all of their trucks in front of the plane so you couldn't see it from 36th Street! Also, the public viewing area was roped off. We ended up camping out where Kraft ends and walking along some train tracks to get up to the fence overlooking the airport. We hung out there for about an hour and did get to see the helicopters, and then watch AF1 take off into the sunset. It was pretty cool.
Re: Obama's visit random thoughts
I'm shocked that you didn't get a visit on the tracks by a secret service agent.
That would have been cool to see.
Speaking of president visits, I remember years ago when Clinton was in office. There was some behind the scenes show I was watching about a LA News Station and they sent out a reporter to cover Clinton's visit. Either the reporter or camerman said something along the lines of "Well, this visit really isn't that big of a deal, but we all the news stations are covering it because they don't want to be the news station that wasn't on scene if the president was assisnated."
Makes sense, I'm just suprised he said it.
And I'm pretty sure I shared this story before, but I figured there are some newbies here.
The video of the boy falling asleep was hilarious. I was thinking about how his teachers must have been awesome if they kept him awake in class, since he couldn't even stay awake to hear one of the most dynamic speaking presidents ever.
And, yes, it was awesome that the President came here and a Michigan school was selected but GOOD GREIF the news coverage was a litte much. I was watching WOODTV this morning and they talked about it for probably half of the broadcast.
As we were watching the news last night after the fact, my husband was lamenting the fact that we didn't go to the airport. It never even crossed my mind (actually, I just assumed he'd fly directly into Kalamazoo). It's cool that you got a chance to see Air Force One take off.
I think it's awesome that Obama gave the commencement speech in Kalamazoo.
They drive me crazy and I refuse to watch them if I have the remote.
Ha ha, I've just watched them for years out of habit. I've been mixing in some WZZM here and there. :-)
Also related, I learned something this weekend that I never realized - and it seems I was the only one who didn't know it. I always thought there was a private jet called "Air Force One." I didn't realize that "Air Force One" is just whatever plane the President happens to be flying on, and that he didn't have a specific plane called "Air Force One."
That is a really good point!
Suze, yes, we had the camera along but XN had it the whole time. I haven't seen his shots. If it involves planes, he likes to be the one with the camera.
MB, we were still a looooooooong way away from anything airport-related. We just happened to have a good view. I suppose there's an off chance that Secret Service were patrolling the entire perimeter of the airport, but we didn't see any.
He did fly directly into Kzoo. He took Air Force One into the BC/Kzoo Airport, then Marine One helicopter to Grand Rapids. I thought about making the trip over to see it, but I figured I'd never get close enough to make it worth the trip.
Here's my question. How do they get the helicopters and limos to the different cities he will be in? Are there only a few that he uses? Or do we hvae some in like every state? Or does he borrow them from other people?
Not sure why I'm so curious about it.
I'm sorry, Suze. Fingers crossed for positive changes in the near future.
Thanks, me too.
I agree - good vibes your way.
At one point, something electrical needed to be fixed, and my dad, along with a few other's from his shop got to go on the plane to fix it. That night my dad took me out by the hangers to see the plane. I was able to see the plane from across the street, which was cool enough for a 9 year old.
Any airplane the President is on is called Air Force One and any airplane the Vice President on is Air Force Two. The President and VP would never be on the same plane. There was an article on it a year or two ago.
ETA: Ben told me that if the President is on a commercial flight (I guess it's happened before) the flight is called Executive One since it's not one of the planes the President uses.
