We have a Mac at home and got AT&T Uverse. Apparently the router is wildly incompatible with Macs. It kept causing the computer to gray screen, and it took us a while to track down the problem. DH tried changing all the router settings and even tried to hook another router up to it and only let the Mac "see" the second one. In any case, it all went downhill and the Mac will now NOT EVEN TURN ON!
He's super bummed, I'm worried we're out the money, and we're sending it off from the genius bar to the repair facility tonight. Genius bar couldn't fix it and didn't promise anything. Can you believe a hardware incompatibility could seize up a computer like that?
Anyone have something going wrong today?
Re: Since I'm an AW, anyone got something going wrong?
Yikes you would think AT&T would have told you about this problem. I would be beyond pisssed if my computer was ruined. We had issues when first got Uverse as well but nothing to that extent - DH had to spend a couple hours on the phone getting things straightened out but its been fine since then.

They kept insisting it was a computer problem and that we needed to contact Apple. After we started looking it up online, we saw that tons of people have this problem and that it's a hardware incompatibility.
DH has been on the phone constantly with ATT and they finally agreed to refund all our ATT expenses and let us cancel the service. But it's going to be $300 just to send off the Mac and we have no guarantee it can be fixed.

Weird! Did you have another internet provider prior that worked fine with your Mac?
If so, I'd blame it on the modem, as opposed to the router...since it sounds like it started with the new internet service (unless I am misunderstanding).
My new MacBook Pro didn't like my old DLink wireless router (modem was fine)...and it would seriously disconnect from the internet every couple of minutes and I'd have to manually disconnect and reconnect the connection in the settings of the laptop. Turns out shortly thereafter my work laptop started having problems too, but to a lesser extent.
The work laptop (PC) began to get worse and worse on the connection, as well...so I chalked it up to my router.
I went to the Apple store and purchased the Apple Extreme Base Station and everything has worked flawlessly every since! If it is your router, then I'd suggest investing in an AEBS. However, if it started with the new internet service it sounds like an incompatibility with the modem and/or service.
I mix up the terms router and modem a lot of the time. The faulty equipment is what brings the signal in from the outlet, not what sends out the wireless signal.
We had standard ATT ethernet before, with different equipment and it worked fine for many years. With Uverse, they only have one piece of equipment and it apparently does not work with Macs. At first it was freezing the computer, then it caused it to gray screen, and now it won't turn on at all.
My PC laptop worked perfectly through all of this.
DH is pretty computer savvy, so he's very frustrated about this whole situation.
Ahhh ok...you are talking about the modem then. So strange! I've never heard of an incompatibility between a computer and a modem that would fry the computer. How old is your Mac?
It was purchased in August 2007 and I think it's a MacBook Pro.
We sent it off last night and genius bar said the harddrive is coming on and that it's probably the logic board. The $300 will cover all parts and labor to fix it (unless it's water, which we know is not the problem).
So we're feeling good in can be fixed, and relieved that the right people are going to do the work. Since we can't buy a new computer for $300, we just have to suck it up and pay it
