First trip to PA - what to see and do?

Hey guys,

My family will be taking our first trip to PA the first week in Oct. and I was wondering what the "must do and must see" things are.  We are going to be in Philly and also traveling to Gettysburg.  Can anyone give us any insight on where we should go?  We have a 2.5 yr old dd and would love to see some kind of farm, harvesting ect.  We are from boring Fl and don't have any fun, fall events, so we would love to experience something outside of the city.

Thanks so much!!

  • Lancaster would be a prime spot to see a farm since it is where the Amish are. They do have farm tours, however it is a very touristy with the outlet malls there, area so it can be crowded. There is a restaurant called Good and Plenty that serves Amish food and it serves it like the Amish would eat it. You sit at a table with a group of people and it is served family style, so you don't order... they just bring out bowls of lots of food.

If you can, check out Hershey. You can at least go to Chocolate World, which is free (although there is some things in the building that you pay for, but the Chocolate World ride is free) and if the park is still open you can go through the park. They do have kids rides, but mostly adult rides but it is really fun, although can be expensive.  If you come in October, it might actually be Halloween in Hershey time, which I've actually never gone for.

I'm not sure if it is open, but there is a place in Northern York called Lake Tobias that would be neat for your 2.5 year old and for you. It is a farm, but it has a ton of exotic animals, including a free range where you can go on a safari ride. The ride is on a schoolbus with the roof cut off and they take you through to see all of the animals. The animals come right up to the bus, and some even try to get on (but can't... they are too big!). They also have reptile shows and they have some animals in cages. It is really cool! It is used for field trips a lot around here, but that time of the year isn't field trip season, so you should be fine with crowds.

  • Also meant to say that if you haven't done so already, I'd post this on the Central PA babies board, as there seems to be more posters over there.  That board seems to be more active than here. Also, try posting on the Philly board!
