moms and moms to be- pg weight gain

i've had a conversation with a mom before about weight gain during pregnancy. she said she gained wayy too much weight when she had her kids b/c she totally got into the 'eating for two' mindset. has/did that happen to you?

me, being non pregnant and all I just don't think I could shake that feeling of guilt when totally pigging out. I don't know that I could justify it as 'eating for two'  and if it's a calorie count thing..like you need X calories for you and baby. I think I totally have that covered with the amt of food I eat now! eek

how has it been/was it for you?

Re: moms and moms to be- pg weight gain

  • I was so sick at the beginning of my pregnancy that I end up only gaining like 15 pounds or something like that (so if I hadnt lost that weight in the beginning, I might have gained around 25 lbs). When I left the hospital, I was 10 lbs lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight.

That being said, when I wasnt sick later in my pregnancy, I didnt eat alot because there really isnt much room left for food.

So I guess I was lucky that I didnt feel the need to pig out, since I didnt want to/couldnt eat for most of my pregnancy!

And ps, you only 'need'  an extra 300 calories a day for the baby after the 1st tri I believe. So it really isnt much more that you should be eating anyways. So the whole eating for two thing is a farse. It is an excuse for women to go totally nuts eating.

  • With Lincoln, I gained about 37 lbs. They recommend only gaining up to 30 lbs, and I was overweight to begin with. Not good. However, I really didn't pig out or "eat for two." DH constantly commented on how much I didn't eat. I gained about 10 lbs. in the last 8 or 9 weeks, when the baby has finished developing and is just putting on weight. Also, a lot of that was fluid. I lost over 20 lbs. in the first two weeks after I gave birth.

This time, I'm trying to gain way less since I didn't even get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm going to talk to the dr. about it on Friday. I'm really trying to cook at home more and eat healthier. However, lately I haven't had an appetite for anything. Everything has sounded nasty, so I have eaten anything I could force myself to eat.

  • I gained a total of 25 lbs with Lily, which my doc said was a normal healthy weight gain for my pre-pregnancy size.  I normally weigh between 115-120 lbs so they didn't want me to gain too much.  I was sicker with Lily than I was with this pregnancy in the beginning.  When I finally got my appetite back with both, it was never that I was eating for two, it's just been that I have some unhealthy cravings that I need to curb.  But otherwise, I drink a lot of water, take my vitamins, exercise, and try to eat a lot of fruits and veggies.  Even now, I find myself not wanting to eat very much.  So far I think I've only gained 6lbs.?  I haven't weighed myself recently, and my bathroom scale is always different than what the doctor's is, so I may find out differently on Friday when we go in for our BIG ULTRASOUND!  yay!

But otherwise, I do agree, the whole "eating for two" thing, is pretty much a farse.  I know there are some instances, obviously, when the mother was underweight to begin with and needs to eat a lot more to gain a healthy amount of weight, but those are specific cases.

I read on one of the bump boards awhile back that there was a mom who gained 15 lbs in the first tri and all she talked about was eating AWFUL foods - like chili cheese fries, hamburgers, hot dogs (which they tell you you need to be careful with in pregnancy and they should only be eaten if they're a certain temp all the way through) and all of this other stuff.  This was her daily diet, and I'm not exaggerating.  No wonder she gained 15lbs so quickly, and that poor baby wasn't getting anything that was good for it.   : (

  • With Luke I lost 12 lbs in the first tri and gained 13 back before he was born, so just +1 overall. when he was 6 weeks old I was down 30 lbs from my pre-pg weight. I was sick and then never felt like eating anything big. I craved melon and salad.

With Vivi I didn't lose any weight, but I didn't gain any until the second half of the 2nd tri. I gained about 15 lbs overall. With her I did crave unhealtier things, but only some of the time.

I guess everyone and every pregnancy is different, but Ithink people who can eat tons of unhealthy food, not puke it up and gain 60 lbs is rare.

  • I lost a few lbs late in the 1st tri, but then I gained it back with a vengence starting around 16 weeks.  I was hungry the entire 2nd tri.  I was hungry from the time I woke up until about 6 pm, everyday!  Now, I am eating better since I am at home during the day and the fresh fruit and veggies are in season.  I also don't have a lot of room to eat a bunch at once, so I eat smaller portions throughout the day instead.  I'm up about 22 lbs now.
  • This is currently really bothering me. I lost 7lbs after the initial sickness, have gained that back and I'm up another 10 from there so that's 17 already and I'm only halfway through. My doc said to aim for 15-20 as I was slightly overweight before. I'm not eating "for two", I'm eating healthy and I'm exercising 5x a week but it seems to be coming on at a rate of 2lbs a week and it's worrying me because I am deathly afraid of looking like I did 5 years ago before I lost all the weight. I'm going to talk to the doctor today - I know I've always been one to gain weight quickly and I'm not exercising as hard as I was before as I don't have the energy so that might have to do something with i,t but I definitely think there are people who end up gaining a lot of weight not because they're pigging out and being lazy but because their bodies just react differently and I think I may be one of them.
  • i've only gained 5 lbs so far i was overweight to begin w/.  i've been eating well and making sure my lil man is getting enough nutrients.  my doctor's haven't been concerned and i'm all belly.  for me weight came off of other areas and made it's way to my belly which is fine by me!  i haven't been eating w/ the mindsent that your eating for 2 that's bologna and will only cause you to binge eat which is obviously not healthy like Mel said you only need an extra 300 calories
