DH and I have cleaned out the DVR. There's a schedule posted in our kitchen with "important" games highlighted.
We have a 30th birthday party on Saturday for a friend and soccer buddy. We got him a USA jersey with his name and the #30 and we're getting together for a surprise birthday "lunch" and watching the US vs. England game.
Anyone else gearing up?
Re: World Cup anyone?
H is in SA now and will be going to something crazy like 16 matches (including all the US group games). I'll have the British channels we get on most of the week--the commentary should be interesting for the England v. US match.
Curly--you follow the Premiership, right? Whom do you support?
We're an Everton household. DH got kinda twitchy, though, when Donovan was playing for them (not a fan). Though part of my heart belongs to Chelsea. Cech, Cole, Drogba, Anelka... Hard to argue with that talent. Don't tell DH.
Listening to the radio this morning, our MISL team's coach (Keith Tozer) was on talking about it. It was.... amusing. Especially the part where he said "American players don't dive." *snort*
I'll be genuinely shocked if the US beats England. But I think they'll make it out of group, provided they don't implode (watching the US vs Italy game in the last WC was just painful).

Word on the street is that Donavan was a changed man this time around though. He did seem far more of a humble team player. H is a huge Chelsea fan. I really like to watch Chelsea play, but H is the type of fan that makes me hate the team, so I keep that to myself. His friend has season tickets and is talking about getting rid of 2 of his seats, and H is gung-ho about buying them, never mind that we don't live in the UK. I suppose it makes more sense than having season tickets for the Buffalo Bills at this point.
I was most jealous about H's tickets to the Portugal/Ivory Coast match, but now with Drogba and Nani out it doesn't seem as interesting to me.
ETA-speaking of Cole, it was just announced he's leaving Chelsea (Assuming we're talking about Joe and not Ashley)
I suppose it's possible Donovan actually learned something from playing over there. Certainly there's no patience for American "ME ME ME" style of play.
I can't believe your H has tickets. We had tickets offered to us for games in '06 but couldn't swing it.
Is Drogba officially out? Last I'd heard his surgery was a success and that he'd be seeing at least some time (now, how effective he'll be...).
Actually, I was thinking Ashley Cole. But I hadn't heard that about Joe. Part of the thing that pisses me off about the states is it's all about baseball, hockey and basketball at the moment. *sigh*
Oh. And Liverpool is probably the other team in our house. DH has a thing for Yossi Benayoun (he's his 2nd favorite player of all time, after Alan Hansen).

If you set your homepage to bbc.co.uk you can get all recent Premiership headlines. It's right next to the column of world news headlines and just as prominent.
I have heard that they are hoping Drogba can play. However, it wouldn't surprise me if he waited until after the group stage to make that call.
H really lucked out with the tickets. One of his really good friends is South African, and he requested all of the US tickets before they were open to anyone other than SA citizens and before they had drawn the groups. They were insanely cheap for him too--something like $10 a ticket.
I am surprised his friend would be allowed to give those tickets to someone else. When we had tickets for Germany we had to provide our passport numbers to get the tickets. I believe our names were on the tickets. I think you could transfer them to someone else, but it was an involved process.
H went to the games in Germany too. I'm pretty sure he bought someone's ticket off of them the weekend before.
OH yeah! DVR is going to be cleared out tonight, but we're the only two we know watching
DH played with a couple of the US players, so he's all excited while I'm just ready to watch some futbol!!!!!
I'm a Chelsea supporter also, though my husband is more of a fan of Man U. His goal is for our next vacation include a stop in England for a Premier League game. We've toyed with going to the EuroCup in 2012 in poland, but we'll see!
It's great to see others who watch- I'm hoping soccer gets more popular here in the US
So excited the WC is starting, we are headed to my friends house Saturday for the game, hoping the US has a great outcome! I am thinking about taking off time to watch the other US games as well
After the WC we have tickets for the MLS Allstars vs ManU
I added the BBC Sports widget to my iGoogle homepage. Great idea!
I dunno. That group is just brutal. I can see them maybe not starting him, but I see him getting minutes if they're not executing well.

We cleared out the DVR and set up a "series" recording for all World Cup games on ESPN & ABC.
We will be watching most of the weekday games at night but are going out to a pub to watch England vs. USA.
I love all the Premiership fans in this thread. We are a Tottenham household, as heartbreaking as it is.
Also, the ESPN FIFA World Cup app for the iPhone is pretty great.
Super psyched!
I'm going to 4 games:
The Argentina v NIgeria game on saturday
The England v USA game on Saturday
The Ghana v Germany game on the 23rd
And the Round of 16 match #55!
I am all geared up and ready to go!!!!
Do you plan to leave the first game early or just arrive late for the second one? that seems like a really tight schedule. there is not much time between those two games.
I plan on leaving early from the first game. I got comp tickets for the first and paid for the second. The distance between the two stadiums is not too bad.
The important question here is for whom Finn will be cheering.
I taught him to chant USA USA USA today. I fear dh is teaching him England. I think I will win
Have fun! You will have to tell us all about it when you get back.
We will be watching in our house!
DH is a huge Arsenal fan.
