Not sure if any of you guys remember me but I asked like, back in January, about good areas of Phx that were within a reasonable drive to Sky Harbor (which is about a mile from DH's probable new office).
Well... we've done SO much research and we're kind of stuck, still, hah!
DH went down for a day trip to meet the folks at his probable new employer last week and it went VERY well, with him leaving to "we'll see you back here soon!", and we know that his friend (who would be his boss, and used to be his boss years ago) is looking pretty much ONLY at him as a new employee.
So I guess the earliest we'd be able to go is in early July. I'm pushing to have him put our start date at the end of September, so it's at least not going from 70-80 here to 100+ there. (We're in Seattle, August/Sept. are two of our nicest months heat-wise).
So now I have more questions! Peoria is pretty nice (I spent a lot of time there a few years back) so that's on our list, plus it's a reasonable drive. Gilbert/Chandler are definitely on the list, and perhaps Tempe although we'd both prefer newer homes (or fully remodeled). Ahwatukee is still on the list but the lots are VERY small, and I grew up on 40+ acres, soo.... yeah. I'd prefer a little breathing room.
What about Glendale? Is Glendale a decent place? Or is that like Guadalupe and we want to avoid it?
Aside from that, I guess I'll probably be more active on the board since we're pretty much just waiting to move!
Re: Moving eventually... honest!
Hello!
Every area has its good and bad spots.
I would count Peoria out, as that is NOT a reasonable drive at all. Maybe in non-rush hour traffic you can make it ot the airport in 30-40 minutes... but if your DH has to drivein rush hour that will take forever.
Tempe would be the closest. If you go more south east in tempe you will find some newer build with larger yards. More towards the chandler boarder.
Chandler and gilbert will for sure have the newer build houses and yard space you are looking for as those are "newer" cities.
Are you going to rent first? Thats the smartest.
I live in Glendale! It's pretty rockin' here--but it is more suburban than a city like Tempe, but the schools where I live are decently good (peoria school district--yes it's in Glendale)
PP is right, go for the rental! Even if it's only 6 months, it is easy to figure out which city personality fits ya! They are saying the market won't recover until at least 2013, so you will still be able to find a deal when you buy.
There are some places with land, but nothing like you grew up with. I wish we had more land here, though it would be crazy hot to try and maintain. We recently planted a tree and some other plants and man that is WORK!
Anyway, GL with your move!
We live in Peoria and love it. Like Kirstin said though - it's not very close to the airport. My DH commutes to ASU in Tempe everyday though and he doesn't mind it. But then again, he takes the light rail, so it's usually 20 minutes drive to the train and then 45 minutes on the train. He uses the train time to read though.
We used to live in Tempe and I love it down there. It's a short drive to the airport area, and if you check out the southern parts of Tempe, you might find larger lots.
I live in South Chandler/ borderline Gilbert and absolutely love it. The only other we would consider moving to would be Scottsdale (if we could ever afford it) and definately Tempe. There are some huge lots and big houses in Tempe- yes, they're not new construction, but we actually like to remodel and make a home our own (a little harder with a cookie cutter new build). I used to work right by the airport, my commute was 30-45 minutes, depending on if there was an accident. You're going to find that about the average commute time, unless your in Tempe.
As for moving in Sept. vs. July-- it's still going to be 105+ and a big difference from where you are now. I wouldn't really let that influence your decision. And ditto PP, rent for a few months just to get a feel of where you'd like to live. You'll find each neighborhood has different personalities, so be sure you like one before making a decision!
I live in South Tempe - pretty much the corner border of Chandler, Tempe and Ahwatukee and we are about 20 minutes from the airport.. We live in the Kyrene School district which, I am told, is the best in the state. We actually have quite a few house for sale in our development area (Warner Ranch) and they seem like great deals to me (especially compared to what we got ours for 1.5 years ago. There are actually 3 on my street all around 180k and should be around 30-45k lots and 2k square foot homes. I am sure you will find a ton of places in similar sizes/price ranges in that area as well.
The development, in case you want to look into it, is between Warner and Ray and Kyrene and Rural (85282). there are some great houses north of Warner as well, but I am not as familiar with those unfortunately.
