Poker "Side Party" Dilemma - Please help!

I'm hosting a Poker Potluck Party where the Poker and Potluck are a suggestion:  ie, if you want to play poker, there's a poker table, if you want to bring a potluck dish, knock yourself out, but either way, we will be partying Friday night!!!

I've had about 10 people RSVP, and am expecting another 5 or so people.  My dilemma is: while I was trying to accommodate people who are not into poker, that number is going to be a small one, and most everyone else will probably be playing poker.  Now I'm wondering what to do to entertain the few non-poker players that are left.  I would hate for anyone to be bored out of their minds!

My husband wanted to have the party this way, but in the past I've said "either you have a poker-party or you have a party-party, but I don't think you can successfully have both".   In fact, I'm rather certain the reason the RSVPs are so low are because of the poker, even though I tried to assure guests there's no obligation to play poker.  I finally gave into my husband and set the party up the way he wanted, and now fear the only people who will be having fun are the poker players.

Any suggestions on what to do with the ?side party??

  • Have a few other games available, Apples to Apples, Scene It, Catch Phrase, etc. . .

Do you have a Wii? If so, they could be entertained with that.

  • How many non poker players do you think you will have?  If you have some kind of game system, like a wii that would be great, w other board games you may not have enough non poker players to get a good game going (apples to apples, catch phrase etc need more than say 3 ppl to play)

Whenever I've been to a party like this I've noticed that in general those who dont want to play poker are pretty happy just chatting it up w others.  Its usually my girlfriends and I who arent playing while our DH's/SO's are playing, we entertain ourselves quite nicely haha.

Ditto.  I don't think you need to worry about it too much.  The non-players who did RSVP probably know what to expect.  GL!

  • Thanks everyone!  All good ideas.  I think there may only be around 5 or so non-poker players.  I will pull out my board games and have them handy in case anyone is up for it.  Otherwise, I agree, I've got a good group of friends.  I'm sure we can entertain ourselves....
  • I agree with Apples to Apples. Also, parties we go to don't have "entertainment" and we do just fine. People seem satisfied just talking.

(When we do try and force activities, no one cooperates and I'm frustrated with the effort I put forth to coordinate them.) It'll be fine. :)
