"Backne"

Sorry if this is TMI.  I'm just so tired of it.

In the past few months I've developed acne all over my upper back.  Not a big deal in the winter, but now that it's summer I don't want to gross people out when I wear backless dresses or swimsuits.  And it's mildly itchy so that gets annoying.

I've seen a dermatologist about what I thought was acne on my arms but it turned out to be keritosis pilaris. But I'm pretty sure the stuff on my back is different.  Definitely more acne-like.

I've tried exfoliating with a loofah/sponge/washcloth every time I shower... not really sure what else to do.  A back "facial"?  Any products that help?  Wonder if it has something to do with stopping BCP...

Re: "Backne"

  • have you tried acne facewash in the shower - specifically something with salicylic acid?  that might work.

  • Probably does have something to do with stopping BCP.

I had HORRIBLE acne that covered my face, neck, chest, shoulder, and back in high school.  The first thing the doctor said is not to over cleanse.  Use something simple like neutrogena or cetophil on your back.  Loofahs will irritate the skin more.  The gentler the better.  You need to moisturize like you do your face.  I ended up needing a topical cream and an antibiotic from my derm.

  • Ugh- I think we're going through the same things at the same time.  I switched to an unscented all-natural body wash and it has really helped.  There will still be some cystic acne (hormonal) but it will get rid of everything that isn't related.

I went to the derm about a month ago re: cystic acne on my jawline.  She gave me some Retin-A and 3 months worth of antiobitics (that I won't take).  That type of acne can only be treated from the inside out since it isn't related to the condition of your skin surface.  The only thing the Retin-A does is thin your skin so it can't hang out there, which isn't something you'd want to use on your back.

  • I got pretty bad backne last year after going off BCP (it took a while to show up, though). I don't think it was all hormonal, though, because it showed up almost immediately after a trip to Europe. That stuff was stubborn! The only thing that helped was getting Clindamycin from my derm and having DH apply it to my back. I was a little skeptical about a topical antibiotic working, but it did. I also had these little salicylic acid wipes, but I used them sporadically since I couldn't always reach it.

Sorry if you have heard this twenty times from me, but my derm said to always use a washcloth only (no poofs or sponges or loofahs). She said those things harbor bacteria. I got a bunch of nice white washcloths from TJ Maxx and bleach them in the wash. I swear that this has made a huge difference.

Also, have you changed hair products or dryer sheets? Those things have also caused body acne for me in the past.

ETA: my derm said not to scrub vigorously - it will irritate it more. The only wash that helped at all was the Neutrogena grapefruit acne wash. I still use some on my back during my period and other times I am prone to oilier skin.

I'm having the same problem, too!  I'm glad this was asked.  What type of body wash are you using that's helping?  I've been using my face wash as body wash and it's not helping.  Sad I think since I'm sweating more it's breaking me out but I need something.

    Good post!

  • One With Nature brand from Sprouts.  They have a lot of natural options I think would work well.

Also, forgot to mention, try switching to a "free and clear" version of laundry soap and softener.  Reducing irritants in as many areas as possible can't hurt.

Okay, I feel like this is a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway:  How do you reach your back with a washcloth?  I use a poof on a stick just because I can't reach my back.  I like the idea of using a washcloth instead, though.  It makes sense that it would be cleaner, ultimately, than a poof.

  • I've also found that gettng a little sun on my back helps a lot.  I still wear a heavy spf since I am pale but after a little time in the sun there is a BIG difference.
