Re: POLL: waiting to get engaged
he waited 7 years - that was about 3 too many in my book and ultimately put me in a position where it was "$hit or get off the pot". I had already made arrangements to stay at a friends house for a weekend while he moved his stuff out because I was THAT tired of waiting, when he finally popped the question on my birthday (the deadline).
it makes me sad to think that I had to give him an ultimatum and i really don't like thinking about it. =(
DH did something along those lines, only it was making up after a fight. I told him I wanted to wait to announce it until I had my ring, but I didn't want that to happen until after BIL/SIL's wedding that was a few months away. I only count the planned-out, romantic version as the proposal.
he proposed on our 5th anniversary. granted we were 15 when we started dating so obviously those first few years kinda don't count. but i was so beyond ready to be engaged by the 3.5-4 year mark. i didn't even want a ring. i just wanted him to ask me
but DH was set on doing it right and since he was paying his own way through school it took him a really long time to save up enough for my ring.
we know a couple who started dating in high school. they have since passed up their 10th anniversary. if hubby had of pulled that, i probably would have kicked him to the curb! we keep telling him that he's gonna owe her a karat for each of those years
"The House We Built."
A journey of building the dream.
ahhhhh...this would have driven me NUTS! then again, I have zero patience.
We had known we would get married w/in 6 months of dating. At every single major holiday and anniversary I would get my hopes up for three years. After our 3rd anniversary I gave up. Figured it would happen eventually and besides, neither of us were in the best place financially. I was unemployed and DH was a waiter. We got engaged two months later, just after I accepted a job offer in Pennsylvania. He proposed when we were out looking at Christmas lights.

Our engagement was very similar! I knew right away, he says he did too.
Four months after we started dating, he proposed, and it was also just before Christmas. We had a 10 mo. engagement which was a bit long, but worked out well since it was long distance the majority of the time!
