S/O Engagement: What's your (your DH's) proposal story?

I know a few posted below but I thought if it was asked flat out maybe others would join in. Smile

Re: S/O Engagement: What's your (your DH's) proposal story?

  • I guess I should share since I asked.

I was very aggravated and felt like DH was never going to propose.  It was July 4, just a few days before our dating anniversary and he had the day off.  I suggested that we should go to the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens for a picnic.  (He swears that he put that idea into my head days before). We picked up lunch (at Dennys!) on the way and had a very nice picnic.  It was a beautiful day and there was even a wedding going on at the gardens.  We wandered around after our lunch and just enjoyed the day.  When we reached one of the rose/herb gardens DH said, "Well, I think we're alone now."  I, being the dork that I am, started singing the Tiffany song... Then he got down on one knee and proposed.  Later that night we enjoyed champagne and fireworks.   It was wonderful and I'm glad I waited for it.

  • Ours is very unromantic, but we loved it!

Our friends had started getting married, but we'd never talked about it before. One day on the couch DH looks at me and says, "Do you want to get married?" Not a proposal, but just breaching the subject. I gave him the, "You're so stupid" face, of course. So he told me to pick out a ring (he knows me well)!

And I did. He did a really good job of not fainting.

I hadn't seen the ring together - I'd just picked the diamonds, the style of band, etc ... then he ordered it. So we planned a vacation to the beach. We got all dressed up (well, compared to regular beach attire), went to dinner, then went for a walk on the beach. He got down on one knee, I cried ... you know the rest of the story.

It wasn't a surprise at all, but he was amazing and romantic, and we both really enjoyed it!

  • We went down to my family's bay house in Port O'Connor for the weekend. After dinner, he suggested I might like taking the dog for a walk. So I did, and I could see the lights going out, etc. I was ready to go back to the house, but he wouldn't let me in for a while. Finally he let me in, and made me close my eyes. He sat me down & asked me to marry him. He'd lit some candles (and bought special crystal candlesticks for them), but he'd forgotten to turn off the tv. hah.

He proposed with a David Yurman ring that had some diamonds on it because he hadn't had a chance to run up to Austin to get the real ring from my mom (we used the stone from her ring).

  • I totally foiled what DH had in mind for the proposal, but I still like the story. :) We were on the annual Thanksgiving Port Aransas trip with DH's family and after the big Thanksgiving meal DH asked me if I wanted to go for a walk on the beach (it was already dark). I kept refusing to go because I thought it was rude of us to break away from the group on a holiday evening and I thought his family would assume we were doing something inappropriate down on the beach. His sister encouraged us to go and said nobody would mind so I reluctantly agreed, kinda complaining on our way down to the beach. We walked down the boardwalk and got down to the beach when I realized just how windy/chilly it was so I told DH we should just go back upstairs. He wanted to walk for a few minutes and again, I got complainy. We started heading back up the boardwalk and he convinced me stop at this landing area about halfway up to sit and look at the stars. As we sat there we saw the biggest shooting star either of us have ever seen, and shortly after that he got down on one knee in front of me. Know what I did? Laughed at him. I totally thought he was just playing around and I kept telling him "That's not funny. Don't joke about proposing. Get up!" He gave me this romantic little speech then put a ring on my finger. I still didn't believe him and thought he must have got one of those gift shop shell rings as a joke. He said we needed to find a light so I could see the ring so we walked down the beach a little til we got to a small light... when I saw it was a diamond ring I FREAKED and then went through the normal reactions of excitement, and saying yes a hundred times and getting teary. Then I kept apologizing for being such a whiney *** all night when he was trying to set up a romantic proposal. I can't believe he still wanted to marry me after seeing me be so uncooperative and high maintenance. ;)

Apparently his whole family knew what was going on because when we got back up to the condo they had champagne waiting and his dad gave a little welcome speech. It was nice.

  • DH and I disagree on our proposal stories.

I say its when he actually asked me to marry him.  We had gotten into a huge argument one night.  Later on, after we made up, we were lying in bed and he said that no one could ever piss him off like I did, and would I marry him?

We were broke, and all extra cash went to the wedding.  I didn't even have an engagement ring but we had the hall booked, my dress ordered...

Three months into the engagement...six months from the wedding...we're at my family Christmas party.  He gets down on one knee - in front of everybody - and pulls a ring out of his pocket and asks me to marry him.  I said yes.  After all, the hall was already booked.  That's the proposal story DH always tells, but I like the first one better.

  • I love proposal stories!

Here is the short version, you can find the long version  including DH's version HERE

May 8, 2009, my 21st birthday! A group of us including family and friends went to the Roaring Fork in Austin to celebrate, and it was a great dinner and beautiful location. When it came time to order dessert, I orded a mini chocolate peanut butter cake, and when the waitress set it down in front of me, in chocolate was written, "WILL YOU MARRY ME?".
I guess my brain was expecting to see "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" written, if anything, so it took a few moments to register what it actually said. Still staring at it I said, "what?", and then I heard Wes move next to me. I turned to look at him and he was on bended knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen! Then he popped the question and I said, "OF COURSE! YES! YES!" He slipped the ring on my finger and everyone in the restaurant was clapping and congratulating us. I cried for about an hour straight after that, just because I was so completely surprised and shocked... we have been wanting to get engaged for quite awhile but I had just about given up on it happening any time soon. Wes did a great job leading me to believe otherwise, and I am so happy he pulled off the perfect surprise!

  • on our first date, we had gone to a restaurant and then went on the ferris wheel in santa monica.  I later joked that he chickened out and didn't kiss me on the ferris wheel.  we went back to the restaurant and the ferris wheel on our 1 yr anniversary - when the wheel stopped at the top, he said something like, "I made the mistake of not kissing you the first time, but I know it wouldn't be a mistake to ask you to marry me."  or something like that, I couldn't remember and had to ask him to tell me again.

his mom kind of blew it the night before - she called him and I could hear her say, "good luck tomorrow."  I was sitting right next to him and overheard.  :/

  • DH took me to the Nutcracker in Houston.  He knows I did NOT want to see the Nutcracker (I've seen about 100 too many already in my life).  I whined and moaned about going, but agreed.

At intermission I went to the restroom and he went out and waited for me.  When we got back to our seats he had a note on my chair.  I didn't think it was from him (I thought he had waited outside the restroom), so I read it and once I realized it was from him - I turned around and he was on his knee.

The second act flew by, and I just couldn't sit still.  He says he took me there because he knew I would never have expected it there... silly boy.
