organic apples

After today (& this bag of apples I just got) I'm 99% sure I'll just fork over the extra $$ for organic apples.

I bought a big bag of apples when I went shopping at Sam's Club this weekend, and the apples themselves are fine overall. It's just that I really have to scrub them down because if I don't then the skin is very very very bitter & nasty tasting. Tongue Tied

I was reading how there are some things you should buy organic over others (if you have to make the choice). Apples are one they say to buy organic since you usually eat the skin & even if you don't, they are thin skinned.

Re: organic apples

  • We're slowly trying to switch over to a mostly organic diet. We tried organic apples a few weeks ago and they were nasty. They were mealy and turned mushy super fast. It might have just been a bad batch though. Plus we don't get the most fantastic produce up here. I ADORE my organic milk though..it tastes so much better!
  • You know what... I took a bite of my apple without washing it, and you know what it tastes like? Soap. :( Yuck.

Yeah, I will probably have to either buy fewer apples at a time, or eat them faster if I buy organic. I've gotten them before, but only at a regular grocery store. Since I hate going to regular grocery stores, I haven't gotten them in a while. At my store they seem to only sell them in packs of 4, so maybe they do go bad faster, and that's why they sell them in smaller quantities.

  • Maybe that was my problem....I bought them at Costco so there were 12 in the pack :)

  • I'm always leery about new "fads" so I tend to stay away for a while...especially since organic is much more expensive (at least it is here...being so far away from California where most of our produce comes from).  In my head I didn't see how it could make a difference in taste.  However, I accidentally got organic cucumbers and holy moly what a difference!  Best darn cucumbers I've ever had (And I'm a cucumber whore).  My mom has changed over to organic and said she is quite pleased.  She suggested I try chicken next and that I'd probably never go back.  I'm going to have to start switching over myself.
  • Our main issue with going organic is that it is more expensive, and our weekly grocery budget can be pretty tight some weeks. So, I think my plan is to start slowly and buy the things that I really think will make the most difference, like the organic apples or any other produce we may eat uncooked or that is thin skinned. From there we will just have to see how the budget does.
