Food for the new parents?

Okay, I'm sold(ish) on the food idea. A couple issues/questions --

I'm heading to my friends' house when I get out of work at 1:00 p.m. There's no fridge and no time to go home (they live about 25 minutes from my work, and my work is 25 minutes from my apartment in the OTHER direction). SO, whatever I bring, it's got to be able to sit out next to my desk and/or sit in my car or trunk from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. before I can hand it off to the new family.

Should I get prepackaged food? Like, snacks (cookies, crackers, chips)? Or something else? Specifics would be helpful.

The gift card idea probably won't work because the only local things that deliver to them are chain pizza places and I know they're not too keen on them (plus a Pizza Hut gift card just seems lame to me...).

Thanks for the help.

Re: Food for the new parents?

  • Can you bring a cooler with you to work and leave the food in a cooler that's really well insulated?  You could make a meal, freeze it, and store it cold all day.

What about those fruit arrangements?  Fruit on skewers?  Could you pick one of those up on the way over?

Is there a local company that sells pre-made healthy dinner meals that you could get them gift cards to?  (Like this place: http://www.myfitfoods.com/ )

You could pick up a ready-made deli tray or casserole at the grocery store on the way to their house.

Or you could just opt for a traditional baby gift or diapers.

  • Snacks would be good. Otherwise you could do a basket with stuff to make an easy dinner like spaghetti (w/o meat) or a fruit basket. We haven't had a lot of time for meals but have done a lot of snacks, sandwiches, and prepackaged meals.

  • I like the cooler idea. Could you make a casserole and toss it in the cooler before you head to work? If not, the next best thing would be taking healthy snacks like fruit, pretzels, etc.

  • I would go the cooler route and do a casserole or something that gets a meal to all but the finishing stages so it can just be heated.  Even better if you can make it in a disposable container that either pops in the oven or microwave to heat.  Something simple like a pasta salad would also be great because it can be eaten cold and will keep in the fridge for a few days, add some sandwich fixings and they'll be able to eat a decent meal a few times.

If that doesnt work for you... do semi-healthy snack foods -- banana applesauce muffins/bread, blueberry muffins, granola, some fresh fruit.  You could do cheese and crackers or hummus and pita chips.   I'm sure they are ready for anything that doesnt come in a box/foil package.
