MIL vent

So DH is off on Wednesday's and MIL came over to talk to him today. She said she thinks I hate her, and then went off to DH about all the things she interperts as me "hating" her. She gets on my nerves, and sometimes I have a hard time not showing it, but I certainly don't hate her. So now I'm paranoid about how I'm supposed to act in front of her. I can not be fake, and my emotions read all over my face.

I think if she would just give us our space and not be so intrusive it wouldn't be so bad, but the constant stopping over and calling (she easily calls 3-4 times a day and is at our house almost everyday) is excessive. The IL's only live about 5 minutes away, but they need to be at our house ALL the time, we can still have distance even though we live that close, can't we?

Feel free to vent, I did!  :)

Oh wow, she sounds like a pill!  You know how I feel about my MIL, but if mine pulled that crap on us I would be putting my foot down real quick (telling DH how I feel about it, and in return seeing how he felt about her actions).

My parents live 3 doors down from us.  There will be days, weeks where we dont call each other.  And they NEVER stop by unannounced, bc they know it's rude and intrusive.

Sounds like MIL doesnt know how to "cut the cord"?

GL, I feel your pain.  MIL's truly are PITA!

  • I don't think it's so much not being able to "cut the cord"...she is just a busy body that always needs to know was is going on. I think she needs a hobby!

Yup, MIL is a busy body too.  DH recently told her she needs to get a hobby, a PT job, or do some volunteer work to fill her time ;)  Maybe suggest the same to yours?

  • This sounds so familiar.... MIL has a hard time talking to me about anything other than money related crap or interfering so I think she gets a similar vibe from me. DH even said she needs a hobby and something to do now she's retired as she hasn't got many friends!! Good luck figuring that one out, Laura. It's so hard to not give off a bad vibe when people are a pain like that but you don't want to come across as fake and like it's ok that she does what she does!
  • I have the same problem. I can't be fake towards my ILs and they all know they are not my favorite people. If my MIL was here every day I would be dying!!! She has told dh that I hate her. he told her that I don't and that we are just different, but she continues to be weird around me. owell!

I would set some boundries w/ her. We had to do this w/ my mom when Luke was real little. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it.

    GL!

  • laura is there any way your dh can have a serious talk with MIL? maybe she doesn't realize her stopping by every day bothers you. better to be honest about the situation so you can guys can somewhat make up and move on. family drama is the worst kind to have and you def. don't want a feud between you two for the next 20 years....esp when you're about to bring children into the picture.

  • I agree with Lauren. I think you need to sit down and have a talk with her. The coming over all the time will only get worse when she has a grandchild to visit!
