James Carville hints at riots if Obama loses?

Wth?   I am trying to find the video for the sound infuriates me!  Well, since he is normally thrown under the bus, nice fear mongering tactic, James.  Yeah, so much for hope.  Ugh!  I am trying not to read too much into his comments, but really....he sounds like a troll on E08, imo.

Re: James Carville hints at riots if Obama loses?

  • The transcript is long, so here is the pull-out of that statement:

CARVILLE: Let me be clear, I said you can call the dogs and light the fire and leave the house. I think it sounds over.

Now let me be clear here, if Obama goes in this race with a 5- point lead and losing this election, the consequences are -- bull, man. I mean I don't think that's going to happen, but I think David it's a point to bring up.

But you stop and contemplate this country if Obama goes in and he has a consistent five point lead and loses the election, it would be very, very, very dramatic out there.

Dramatic out there?  Don't think it will happen?  The hint is too much of a normal scare tactic.  (I need to find the video)

  • It sounds like he's talking about vote rigging.

  • I think it's a huge stretch to say he's hinting at riots.  I was watching CNN when Carville said that and thought, "what does that mean?"  But I also had a "huh?" moment when he said "you can call the dogs and light the fire and leave the house."

It's James Carville.  He's prone to exaggeration and very animated speech to make his point, and he's sometimes pretty unintelligible in the process, but I don't think he's ever been associated with inciting riots, and I don't think that's what he was doing here.

  • If Carville had a clue he would STFU about riots. That's not going to persuade older white people to vote for Obama, it's just going to remind them of the past race riots and associate Obama with events that inflamed the racial divide.
  • My dad keeps telling me Obama "supporters" (I know he's thinking black people but he'll never admit it) are going to riot if Obama WINS!

Apparently, Obama supporters are just waiting for an excuse to go buck wild in the streets, either way!

I don't think he was suggesting Obama losing alone would cause riots, but making the distinction that going in with a solid lead and then losing would be suspicious to many given the past problems we have had regarding potential voter fraud in elections.  That being said, James Carville is and always has been very effusive and prone to exaggeration.

  • im always up for a riot. I went to U of MD!

  • I saw him say this. I didn't understand him to be inciting riots at all. I took his comments to mean that if Obama goes into the election with a large lead in the polls but loses, it could have some serious ramifications for race relations in this country. I don't think he's off base on that.

I don't think he means an Obama loss = bad for race relations. I understood him to mean large lead in polls for Obama + Obama loss = bad for race relations. It would raise the issue of more people being closet racists than we realize. It could also leave a lot of minorities (well, people generally but minorities specifically) feeling even more disillusioned with the process.

  • I think this another one of those instances that people are going to hear what THEY want to hear in this. There's so much room for interpretation.

When we heard this last night, my first reaction wasn't riots...it was "If Obama goes into Nov. 4 with big leads in most polls and loses, something happened with voter fraud."

That's how I took it. Others took it as riots. Others saw it as race issues. It could mean something different to everyone...I didn't interpret it at ALL as if he loses there will be riots...

  • Ditto marriednow and bmcb. I'm not a fan of Carville in the slightest, mostly because he says stuff like this. But the point that there could be trouble in River City if Obama goes in with a big lead and ends up loosing is not invalidated by his ramblings.

Said very well.  These are my thoughts also.

  • I don't see the leap to rioting.

    This made me laugh!

  • My 69 year old uncle told me a couple of weeks ago he believes there will be riots no matter if Obama wins or loses.
  • You all are making me feel better regarding his comments.  The dramatic out there part is what got me, I guess.

lol at the U of MD riots--I shouldn't laugh, but that was funny.

  • So the Talking Skull is opening his mouth again, huh?

I didn't necessarily take it as a riot for I took it as a claim of closeted racists causing Obama to loose.

I think what Carvill doesn't understand is that the polls are one thing and the actual election is another.  People lie in polls for whatever reason (although it's been alluded to by Carville and others that people who say they are going to vote for Obama in the polls and pull the lever for McCain are racists and are trying not to appear as a racist by claiming they are voting for Obama.

What you tell a pollster and what lever you pull are two very different things.  People are not always honest with pollsters.  I know when people call my house and try to poll me, I'm never completely honest.  In fact, I try to screw with the pollster and have fun with them.
