Totally dumb question from first time gardener

I have planted my NYC patio with flowers and herbs.  Everything is growing very well, tomato plants show promise, unlike last summer :)

 Re: Basil & mint

freaking growing like crazy after 4 weeks.  Both over a foot tall.

Do I harvest them now and put in new seeds?  I have a huge freezer to accomodate them as i won't be able to use them all right now.

Okay, I said it was stupid.  Advice?

  • with the basil, I harvest continually all summer, it will continue to yield more leaves.  Pinch off the basil on the tops, as that will be the first to flower if you don't get to it in time.  Once the basil flowers, it becomes bitter.

    ditto.

basil & mint, unlike cilantro, produce all season so you can continually harvest.  Mint actually can overwinter, too.

Sounds like it might be time for you to make pesto and a mojito!  Stick out tongue

  • my basil and mint are huge too!  In Ohio, not NYC, but they are out on my patio.  I was surprised and can totally understand why the mint was labeled "invasive" and I'm really glad I put it in a pot not in the ground!
