We haven't found new doctors since we moved to New England... a year ago for me, two for DH. Well now my prescription for my BCP is up sometime early August and I know that my doctor back in Pennsylvania won't give me another extended renewal as it will have been two years since I've seen her last and I was pushing it when she renewed it last time for six months. So now I'm on the hunt for a new doctor stat!
I've found a few doctors that seem to have decent ratings online and I'd feel comfortable with. Two of them are male and two are female. Both the male doctors and one of the female doctors are in their 70s (according to a website) while the other female doctor is in her 40s. However, all the doctors in their 70s have received outstanding reviews while the one for the doctor in her 40s is good but not as good as the others. So, would you go to one of the doctors in their 70s knowing fairly well that they'll probably retire before you're looking to have children and would have to start the process all over again... or stick with the doctor in her 40s to begin with. FWIW, I'm not even sure if we'll still live here when we decide to have kids but I guess it's always good to be prepared.
So... WWYD?
Re: WWYD: Dr. Related
I would go with the one that sounds the best, even if he/she is older. I tend to gravitate toward the fresh-out-of-medschool or the graduate a million years ago. Both tend to have unique perspectives.
If you are simply going for the annual exam and don't see this doctor frequently, I wouldn't worry too much about picking the wrong one. If you go once, get the meds you need/want and dislike the person, there's no compelling reason you have to go back.
FWIW, whenever I've had a doctor retire or move, they have given me notice of the doctor taking over their practice who has had the same or similar personality. If you choose one of the older folks, there's hope that their successor will be someone like them.
Good luck! I just made my annual appt with a new dr who was recommended by a friend. First available appt was for the second week of SEPTEMBER and I made the appt three weeks ago. She had better be good for that kind of wait!
I would schedule a consult with both if you can. Talk to them and see what it "feels" like. Maybe you'll click with one of them and it'll just feel right even if it's an older doctor. Website reviews can be misleading so if at all possible I would try to talk to each of them first, but I'm a skeptic about doctors and I think if I am going to put that much trust in them I'm going to "interview" them first.
Like pp's have said, I would schedule a consult with the one of the older docs and the younger. Feel them out and see which one you are more comfortable with. You'd be surprised how long some doctors stay in the profession. My gyno is in his 70's. He was the doc that actually delivered me!
