Road Trip, Passing through Georgia.

Hi:  I am doing a short road trip and will be driving through Georgia towards Tennessee on I-75 N for 10 or so hours.  We want to visit some touristy ?road trippy? stuff (giant balls of string, chickens who play tic tac toe?.) any one know any funny little stops we could make or any cool restaurants to stop at?

I have never been out of the airport so I dont know what is around.

Re: Road Trip, Passing through Georgia.

  • For sure, you're going to need to visit the world's largest peanut monument in Ashburn, GA (exit 82). DO NOT SPEED IN THIS AREA (Turner Co.). Seriously, 72 in a 70 is about it for the Barney Fifes in that area.
  • Perry, GA is the "reading capital of the world."  At least, that's what their billboard says! You'll pass it only if you're coming from Florida, because it's way south. I can't remember what exit. You could also visit "Babyland General" in Cleveland, GA where all the Cabbage Patch babies are born. Total cheese.

I like this website, roadsideamerica, to find fun places along the way when we travel.

Where in TN will you be visiting?

  • There's always World of Coke and the GA Aquarium, but I don't think I'd call them road-trip friendly. The Varsity is a famous Atlanta restaurant too, but umm... I don't know if I'd want to hit the road after a meal there, lol.

Cordele, GA is known as the Watermelon Capital and it's on 75.

Warner Robins, GA has an Air Force Museum that's pretty interesting if you like planes.

Macon has Indian Mounds, Cannonball House, and Rose Hill Cemetery where Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers is buried.

  • You could hop off of 75 North when passing through Marietta and eat at the Big Chicken. It is a KFC with a HUGE mechanical chicken on the side of the building.

When we pass by it with our GPS on it even has "Big Chicken" printed on the map as a point of interest.

  • Juliet Ga is just off of 75. Don't blink or you'll miss it but Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed there.

Also in Ashburn is a statue of a giant cow. It's in the parking lot of the Chevron/Dairy Queen right off of I75. It's just a cow, next to the parking lot. I have pictures of DH trying to milk it. Good times.

  • I did find  World of Coke and the GA Aquarium and throught they would be cool.  However, we are trying to get from Jacksonville to Nashville in a day....I think it is a 9.5 hour drive so Not sure how long we would have to see each place.  If we find to much stuff to do in GA, maybe we could make our first stop in Chattanooga instead of Nashville.   I do want to see the big cow, my husband is a cow fan....collects figures.

Thank you! I was about to get insulted. If you're going to be catching some random I-75 sights, then the Big Chicken is a must.

I happen to own a Big Chicken ornament. JealousE? Stick out tongue

I'm almost positive it came from one of the craft fairs or specialty-type shops in Marietta. It a laquered metalic and so shiny!

Check out the Marietta Square nearer to Christmas time. I'm sure they will be sold again!

If you like the Allman Borthers and have a little time, you can also visit the house where they lived in Macon. It's a museum now and just opened to the public last Decmeber.

Another possibility is Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley, a peach/pecan/strawberry farm. It's off exit 142 (sign says Housers Mill Rd - St Hwy. 96) in the central part of GA. The store has a lot of cool stuff, and there's a quick-service cafe with good sandwiches. Also very good peach and butter pecan ice cream, wonderful peach cobbler and a whole lot of other goodies I haven't tried but I'm sure are great. They also offer farm tours if you have time.
