Big Island Camping

Has anyone camped on the Big Island? We're thinking of taking a long weekend this summer to do some snorkeling (because it's far better than Maui!) and to explore some off the beaten paths. Oh and to eat as many Big Island Candies brownie ice cream pies and Punalu'u burgers as possible. :)

Anyway, any advice on what to bring? Favorite campground? Favorite discovery?

TIA!

Re: Big Island Camping

  • That sounds awesome! I'm really curious what kind of answers you'll get, 'cause we're hoping to do a little camping there summer '11.

I'll take good notes for you! I've been doing some research on the TA forums - camping is definitely not promoted as a good idea there. We're going to go for it anyway. We've visited some of the campgrounds in the past (most we've seen are decent, a couple were horrible) and we've been to the BI many times (this will be our 4th trip there this year!). Anyway, I'll keep you posted on what I learn.

  • I can't offer any suggestions since I am SO not a camping person but I just wanted to say that I must try these Punaluu burgers you speak of. You already got me addicted to those ice cream brownie pies so I'm looking forward to the same thing happening with the burgers. =P

Why do ppl think camping is not a good idea on the BI?

I loved camping on Kauai (Anini Beach and Polihale Beach, for the curious)!  Have a great time, I too, am looking forward to what you learn.  Sounds like fun!

  • Well, according to the TA board regulars, most BI campsites are filthy, full of addicts and criminals, and used primarily by locals who don't like visitors/tourists and aren't afraid to resort to violence. They suggest you camp only in the National Park or go to a different island. That's a very, very basic summary of what I've read.

Funny story about those burgers, Lisa....We were on our honeymoon and had just explored South Point. We were hot, exhausted and starving. MrsNFB had told me about Punalu'u Bakery's sweet bread and malasadas. So of course we had to stop by. As we were waiting in line for our goodies, we noticed all the locals coming in and ordering burger after burger. We quickly followed suit and omg, those burgers hit the spot. Handmade patties, sweet bread buns, simple stack of crisp lettuce and tomato....they were heaven. Perhaps it's because we were so hungry that made them sooooo good but we've driven 3 hours from Kailua-Kona just to have more of those burgers and they were just as good as we remembered them.

So now that I've talked these burgers up so much, you'll probably go and be disappointed. I hope not! Keep in mind that the only place to get a decent burger here in South Maui is Outback, which is kinda pathetic. :)
